I'm not totally crazy about them either, but they have some great tunes.

I just sense a lot of hate for them/thom(lol).

idm kids hate them cause thom yorke likes teh idms but they are rock band AAARRGH IT MAKE ME SOOOOOOO ANRGY

I have a couple friends who absolutely despise them and their fans. They say "they just don't get the big deal about their music." I think most of the hate, beyond IDM fans who think idioteque is gimmicky bullshit, comes from people whose favorite band isn't as popular or acclaimed.

radiohead are good. thom yorke sometimes comes off as a weird cunt but their music ranges from competent/slightly annoying to absolutely excellent. some brilliant albums in there, especially kid a/amnesiac.

hating what a lot of people like instantly grants you a false sense of discernment and refined taste. it is false because if you actually were discerning and had good taste you would just go about listening to good music without any concern over how mainstream or obscure it is.

They're kind of like Super Furry Animals in that they chase gimmicks like surround sound or protools or softsynths or whatever. They should just play their rock music live in a big room in front of good microphones connected to a high quality stereo tape machine. They can't accept the fact that they're a rock band and they keep searching for that special "it" that doesn't exist. If I ever met them I'd tell them to keep it simple stupid. I heard their last album on a plane last year, it was average but I bet they're more enjoyable live in a small venue without any 'fans' in the room.

radiohead have kept in relatively simple in terms of their musical ideas. if you listen to 'the eraser', it's a pretty good example of keeping it minimal while still being effective (although that's thom yorke). they'll never be slint, silkworm or the stooges at their best, but they are still not overcomplicating anything that much, and have never been particularly overproduced. i do hate it when they put strings in their songs though.

This is actually kind of true. When I think about it their best tracks are like just a piano, some pads and vocals. Keep it simple. Well, the best tracks to me at least.

Agreed, Radiohead (and Super Furry Animals for that matter) have written many great songs over the course of the last couple decades, regardless of how those songs are presented. That's what matters. The fact that they have retained a large fanbase over this timespan is a testament to this...

Nearly any musical genre you can think of got to wear it is by experimentation, in all it's forms. Otherwise, music literally wouldn't exist as we know it.
