i hate hype surrounding movies sometimes. when i'm being told by a few people "you've got to see this movie", i never watch it. don't know why.

Thats because its never going to live up to expectations you have. Also, it pisses me off when people go on and on about how great something is.

I'm the same... I enjoy discovering things, be it a movie, book, beer, or what have you, at my own pace.

i think it's about things being sacred or not. if you discover something yourself that no one else seems to be in to it naturally becomes special.. like you found a gold coin in your back yard. once you realize or notice others finding the same coin in their yard it's a lot less special. i don't think it has anything to do with pretentiousness UNLESS you're getting in to something for the opposite reason - because it has a popular following. jmo.

i generally like and don't care if other people like it. for instancei like all the cheesy wobble dubstep tracks, the fact that it's played at clubs doesn't change it. it's just something to share.

but in all honesty watmm kinda put me off aphex and squarepusher

The bottom line is, I can't slow down long enough to give a fuck about what somebody I don't care about thinks about something I enjoy.

which is why you made a thread about it on the internet?

The idea behind this thread was due to the conversation I had earlier. Was just curious what other people thought.

this, is obviously the exception

no!

actually i take that back... i have nothing against this one girl, but i don't listen to something she suggests on the account that everything she said i should listen to was terrible!

the best is when you haven't seen a particularly popular movie.. and, upon watching it randomly (and upon others' knowledge of your not having seen it) the people around you start reciting lines just before they are said, and acting out situations before they happen. the Big Lebowski would have been a good movie if i could look at it without thinking of the non-stop hype from everyone while i'm trying to fucking watch it. watching movies alone is the only way to go.

If it turned out that Squarepusher didn't believe in his music and was just making it to make a quick buck, that wouldn't make it sound any different to me.

yes! agreed,

also i just feel bad for people that don't appreciate Tchaikovsky. I guess i consider myself lucky to see every god created by humans and the whole range of human emotions reflected back at me when listening to his decadent compositions ;) Tchaikovsky has to be one of my biggest influences/infatuations...and talk about played out! Aside from the nutcracker there's swan lake, sleeping beauty, and not to mention the *ugh* 1812. You couldn't hold a gun to my head and make me unsee the brilliance i have seen in his work (and mozarts too).

right on with tchaikovsky. i can see why cynics have it easy criticizing his music, but for me his melodies are just too god damn incredible to write off.

serenade for strings is my favorite. check it out if you haven't, it's incredible

i always get a bit egotistical when someone i've liked for a while surges in popularity, but i dampen that pretty quickly. i love sharing music with people and i love it when someone gets stoked over a tune i throw their way. i'm definitely always ecstatic when someone puts me on to some music i end up loving, no matter who it is.
