sony wins, but it would be more interesting than seeing bland popstar number 304495 being number one and sony still winning.

im not buying either of them though.

Instead of Rage Against The Machine, they so should've tried to get this bad boy up the charts:

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

on the 'sticking it to the man' note, this decade has been mired by the iraq/afghan wars, a new recession, and in-your-face political scandle (expenses). these have actually been in the public consciousness though (ie. not just people who take a interest in economics or politics), so on this level i think that there is a degree of protest, or at least articulation of disgruntlement at political culture/global events/the arts that a song (which could otherwise sound dated or teen angsty) carries the sentiment of well.

in this case, rage against the machine are a vessel for a conglomerate of public dissent, and most certainly not promotion of their own. it's a communal act that could have only been made possibly by the social technologies developed over the last decade too, which makes it all the more beautiful.

"The song was beaten to the top on 23/12/2007, having reached number 31 in the UK singles chart, with the UK Christmas number one being a cover of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston's When You Believe as performed by X-Factor winner Leon Jackson."

So you lot would rather see some awful nineties crusties at number one with an aural equivalent of the average youtube comment, rather than a fresh faced young Geordie lad with an interpretation of Camus' myth of sisyphus?

i'd think it was briliant if rage against the machine could have a christmas #1. it's got nothing to do with the record label, it's all to do with the fact that x factor has had the xmas #1 for the last 4 years now, maybe 5 this year. a dirty protest, if you like.
