What do you think Rich's unreleased tracks from Daddy/Windowlicker to Analord sounded like?

Recommended Posts

I'm talking about whatever new stuff he composed from around '98 to whenever he completed Analord '02-'03? I remember reading something from him where he said "my music now is much too experimental to be released". I'm thinking he was doing some wicked noise and DSP stuff we'll never get to hear. I was hoping after the RDJ album we'd hear the next logical step from him which I was imagining to be akin to Richard Devine or D'atachi but instead we got the old tracks from Drukqs (albeit I'm sure the piano stuff was newer). Seems like a shame Aphex could have closed out the century with a completely mental album years ahead of everyone else at that point. Theories?

For me it's all stuff like Perc#6, [equation] and that, 'cold' things I'm not that much into. The thing like what his unreleased stuff would be 100 times better and advanced and he doesn't released it in order not to be pissed off blah blah .. is a myth (I hesitate to put "imo" or not). There are utterly good things in it certainly, see that youtube vid 'afx rare live recording from 1995' first track, looks really, really nice, but nothing "dangerous" for him, more like tracks he finds too personal to release it. (He's got also a lot of stuff like Bbydyonchord I remember)

good observations, i'm glad someone else in here knows about the 'Perc#6" track on the compilation with the MEgo dudes http://www.discogs.com/Various-Or-Some-Computer-Music/release/137805

this is what first came to mind when i thought of his 'more experimental' tracks from this era

I really want more stuff like this (and Rushup Edge). Hell, I really want this track.

probably similar to a lot of the music people were making briefly after daddy/windowlicker was released

can you elaborate on this statement

Perc # 6. Currently soulseeking the shit out of it as I'm pretty happy to be hearing about an Aphex track previously unavailable to my ears.

*loud fart*

agree to the myth

If they where good he would release or play them and not wait several years and then not release all of it

Its totally normal that you need 10 tracks or more to make one really good

well, i remember aphex had some interest/similarities with classical/orchestral music : you can hear it in I care because you do & Richard d james album. obviously this mix of orchestra with hyper fast jungle has inspired venetian snares a lot. dunno if that explains why aphex went on something different later (analoggins etc). well that's just some speculations from a total outsider.

My theory is that he probably kept pushing the speed and level of detail until it reached a critical mass then said "fuck it, what is the use in doing this?" and reverted back to his roots.

AFX's unreleased music could sound like anything. I mean really, someone who practically has a compulsion to compose crazy amounts of music and constantly experiment with different sounds and styles is bound to have an insane variety of tracks, no matter which era. The released material is just the tip of the iceberg; it doesn't all just sound like "Aphex Airlines" just because it was released around the same time. Joyrex's MD samples give you some idea of what his unreleased tracks sound like, a lot of the time he's just experimenting with sounds or ideas that will progress further into the kind of crazy awesome material that will eventually get released, and the rest of the time he'll simply sit down and make a track, which will probably be archived whether it's any good or not.

I don't have access to other people's unreleased music, but I can assure you that I made ALL of the tracks in the attached MP3. Lots of different styles there. I love them all but I wouldn't release any of them without a context like this.

Prepare to be disappointed.
