Did Thom Yorke "borrow" my beat?

Recommended Posts

im just going by what the artist told me. and again you're only going by (in what you reiterate for the 3rd time in your above post) what one of the collaborators told you, not the other half of the project (brian e). If you don't agree that's fine. people can compare the tracks for themselves.

but back to blicero, sorry

i'd try to email/contact radiohead/thom about this... I understand its kind of slimy to get all greedy or whatever, but fuck man... the music business is a tough business, and if your work was directly taken and used in something that sold and made millions, theres nothing wrong with wanting something out of it. Thom may not like you for it, but if he liked you at all he would have thanked you and told you he wanted to sample your track.

yeah i think kcinsu's probably right. especially if the contest was in any way affiliated with their record label or publishing company. if it was just them dudes doing it totally by themselves it wouldn't hurt to email them. but i think you're most likely out of luck if you want any form of recognition over this. but at least watmm knows :emotawesomepm9: and of course more fuel for the radiohead hater fire

Apparently when Limp Bizkit was doing that whole tour of GC stores to audition guitarists, one of the quips was, you had to sign a contract saying they had the rights to everything you played when you auditioned. If you started playing anything resembling a cover tune, the guy behind the table would cut your volume and your audition would be over. I wouldn't expect Thom Yorke to be dicky like that, but who knows.

Definitely send him an email man, he usually comes across as a conscientious guy. For some reason zebox won't load for me (looks like the server's down), but if the beats are as similar as everyone else is saying, I'd guess he'd at the least acknowledge the similarity. Maybe the beat got lodged subliminally in his head, who knows - I doubt he consciously ripped it off. Although I'd word the email so it doesn't come across like you're trying to sue the crap out of him.

OK, good to know I'm not just hearing things.

First off, I'm not trying to build a legal case, or anything like that. I'm flattered, if anything. The only think I would ever want would be some tiny bit of recognition (even if it wasn't made public).

All sounds used in my song were from the Radiohead contest samples, which can be found here: http://www.citizeninsane.eu/loophole.html

I can't remember exactly which samples I used, but I believe I used at least these 3:

BTW, thanks for the nice feedback on the track.

Before I read this post I was thinking that maybe Yorke could be a lurking watmmer, nicking bits and pieces from all of us when we post new shit. I guess it's still possible.

The internet is scary like the wild west when it comes to this business. I worry about that shit sometimes.

To be safe, when if you are ever worried about this sort of thing happening, make sure somewhere by your composition it reads "© 2010 (or whatever the year), your name, all rights reserved".

Haha I just found this thread now. Sorry to continue the threadjacking but...I'm going to talk to Brian E about this soon. I was never aware he felt that way about Tom just using the basic elements of the remix to make a new song. Seems pretty unlike Brian to take offense like that actually. Either way, I find it pretty hilarious that anyone even thinks the entire Free Festival album was original in any way. Personally for me, the whole thing was just an exercise in feel-good electronics with folky guitars all over it a la Gary Higgins. Really not the kind of pairing that hasn't been done before...not worth fighting over!

Yeah I would like to hear this...

백호야~~~항상에 사랑할거예요.나의 아들.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.

I'd suggest we sample radiohead and do a WATMM album but theres not a whole lot worth sampling.

pffft someone could make a dope ass record with samples from the barney theme song, lets not get bitter, to say you couldn't find a massive supply of interesting samples from the radiohead catalog is a bit delusional

Guest Blanket Fort Collapse

Idiotech is the last track by radiohead I would want to sample. I'm no fanboy but dear god have you know ears, no matter if you like the structure, melodies, toms voice whatever theres a fucking shit load of cool sounds in radioheads catalog.

I would not be surprised at all, if there was a fine print that said it all belongs to him now.

I fully expected that I was surrendering all rights to the track I was submitting. That's ok with me.

Apparently Zebox is dead for now. I've been meaning to start using SoundCloud anyway, so hear is the track: http://soundcloud.com/dtrenz/capillaries
