best vsti for ~$100?

Recommended Posts

^ the analog edition is about $200 and I highly recommend that over the digital edition (though I think you should be able to get them all for $240-250 cuz the wavestation is worth it). You get a bit stuck with the korg sound, which I love, but sometimes you need something a bit more versatile. I would say wait till you have some other synths in your arsenal before getting the legacy collection. If you're willing to spend the 200 though, they are fantastic synths. I just upgraded recently to get the mono/poly since it came in later, and though I was a LITTLE let down, it's still a great synth with some great bonus features. The ms-20 plastic controller thing is a bit of a joke though. It's too small, the knobs are terrible, and it just wasn't very useful to me.

edit: also it kinda started falling apart and eventually broke. Which wouldn't happen if if was just sitting in a studio, but moving it around and taking it places pretty much requires some form of padded bag or case.

While I'm at it, GFORCE Minimonsta is a badass minimoog emulation. It's $150 though. Well worth it if you are in need of moogyness. It's very flexible and sounds fantastic. Plus it's polyphonic.

wise choice. it's one of my fav's. Learning the very sensitive nature of your tweaks to the filter drive knob is one of the key elements to making imposcar really stand out among other synths.

It also can do additive synthesis, and has a bunch of waveforms, and various awesome filters.

what sold me on it was the price and the fact that underworld made a patch for it and that ozric tentacles use an original oscar

if you haven't made the purchase yet I can vouch for u-he ACE. i just picked it up last night (don't know why I waited so long...). it's fackin awesome dude! it's nowhere near as versatile as Zebra, but what it does it does very very well (best virtual analog i have ever heard, even tops DCAM Synth Squad which I've been playing with the demos of). on top of the awesome "analog synth" appeal it also does some really cool shit with audio rate modulation (think FM but for any knob you want, not just pitch). at least grab the demo and try some of the presets, very very nice. i just sold my Dave Smith Mopho preparing to go into a "majority software" era in my studio, and this makes the transition seamless...i don't miss it one bit.
