Those all are, Spiderland already is, since it came out in 91' and is cited as a early post-rock and math-rock album.

Explosions is good, but immensely overrated. I like Mono better, and there a shitload of other decent post-rock bands. Sigur Ros' Ágætis byrjun or ( ) are the only other "classics" that comes to mind.

Post-rock use to be a more diverse label in the early 90s to describe Tortoise, Seefeel, Stereolab, etc. It used to be an umbrella term for experimental, mostly instrumental, krautrock-esque indie bands. Now with terms like post-metal and mathrock, it just seems to be any band that plays epic sounding loud/soft guitar riffs for 15 minutes or longer is "post-rock."

True. Pretty much any instrumental rock band is labeled post-rock these days, experimental or not. Too many of them strive for that specific sound (rather than experimenting) and all end up sounding the same. Same thing that happened with indie rock. It used to be broad, then a few bands got popular and all new bands emulated their sound.

i sure hope pivot get the credit they deserve and eventually become a 'classic' post-rock band.

also as much as it has become a bit of a cliche, 'post' genres are awesome. especially post-metal.

The term Post-rock has been used for years now so I don't think it's a trendy title. If a band is described as PR I get an idea of what it will sound like, so it's pretty legit to me anyway. I guess it usualy means not much singing, long passages of instrumental music and goes quiet-quiet-quiet-quiet-LOUD-LOUDER-NOISE and then quiet again. Or sumat along those lines LoL.

Some Mogwai tracks I would consider classic already. GSYBE F#A#~ is another classic but got to be in the mood for it.

post metal to me is like isis and jesu. almost everything else in that genre seems to try and mimic isis. and jesu is moving away from that genre entirely

Guest Benedict Cumberbatch

to me there are already classic albums in this genre.

mogwai - come on die young

gybe - skinny fists

do make say think - & yet & yet (you could argue their earlier album are more genre)

silver mt zion - all their albums

some other stuff i forget.

post-rock is a decent genre name. better than idm etc.

well, in my opinion isis ripped off neurosis. at least in the beginning. these days they're kinda going their own beautiful way.

and there's nothing wrong with mimicking isis. as long as these bands bring something new to the genre. and a lot of them do, whether it be subtle or not so subtle.

Same here, "post-" anything usually diverts my attention. So, umm, let's discuss post-IDM!

true, their roots were in progressive rock, but i think post punk is a fitting title for what they did

From what I've heard of them, I agree that their sound is more post-punk than anything.
