How can people consistently listen to

One thing that's tough for me in this respect is that I'm often more naturally drawn to music for what you might call 'cognitive' reasons, rather than emotional ones -- what I mean is, I get pleasure from music that I can't wrap my mind around at first in a musical sense (the way the beat works, how the sound are made, what exactly the key is and how the harmonies work together, the 'logic' of the chord progression), rather than being drawn in by an apt lyrical depiction of some experience, belief or feeling, or by the music's evoking particular emotions in me. It's why I like autechre so much! Although I am constantly trying to open my mind to hearing value in music along other dimensions than that, bc that seems like a rather one-sided approach to listening, and I know there's a lot I have yet to enjoy from not properly hearing it.

I think I see where you're getting to.

Personally, I see it as functional music for the soul, much like dance music is functional music for the body.

I understand that most people do not see the mental imagery that I always invoke from dreamy ambient music, and in such cases I completely understand why it would be largely pointless to listen to.

I have my own classification of different "genres" of ambient music based on what imagery they evoke. Some is about the future, the sea, but it gets more complex. One "genre", which I am a huge fan of, is all about early 19th century industrialism, big empty communist buildings, rusted steel. I understand myself how nonsensical it seems, but I still enjoy this internal assimilation of various pieces, it is like returning to certain places through different artists.

that's not why i don't like it.

CSM: Is Brownout a post-industrial music?

LUKE FUCKIN HAZARD: What do you listen to whilst cookin? I've been enjoying my gf's Sinatra live CD recently, hehe -- it makes me feel badass and suave all the while.

I like this guy. Yes, definitely.. Though there is a sense of naturalness in his work, in an acoustic, wooden sense.

The Real NY (not by him, admittedly, but on his myspace) is absolutely amazing to my ears.. It's complete nonsense put into a weird psychedelic potpourri.. It makes me think of 60's military offices (ambient noise often does that for some reason), mixed with crazy smoky jazz.

Sinatra sounds like a great choice. I usually put on classic rock when I'm rocking out in the kitchen.

The best music for BBQ's with your friends is definitely VIETNAM rock.

Music to suit the mood, so if you are sad and depressed it's not out of the ordinary to listen to sad and depressing music - which again is kind of a feedback loop.

when i throw on something like midnight star - the midas touch for example, i can't stop noddin' my head and just feel the music, and to say it doesn't leave a lasting impression is just silly.

Can't believe nobody has posted

in response yet.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.

You know... I've come to realise that I can't really listen to sad gloomy music any more. It doesn't make me depressed tho, usually it just bores me.

I like ambient and drone stuff but usually stuff with a nice, pleasant, warm atmosphere. Most of SAW II I find very boring but tracks like Blue Calx and Rhubarb I can't get enough of (although Rhubarb definitely has a sadness to it... it's kinda uplifting...)

I'm sure at one point in my teenage years I listened to only Autechre and Radiohead for like a whole year. Now I don't tend to listen to whole Autechre albums... my favourite Autechre song right now is probably Gaekwad actually... cos it's just so damn happy! And Radiohead I can't listen to at all... just bores me to tears... I don't think it's bad music by any stretch, just doesn't suit my mood, EVER.

There's a certain kind of sad music I still like tho... stuff that isn't really gloomy, more sad in a vibrant way if that makes sense... or is that a contradiction? I like Xiu Xiu, cos even though it's pretty sad it's also goofy and scatter brained and over the top... whereas stuff liek Radiohead is just sad... and sad... and... sad.

That's why I like Animal Collective so much... cos it's mostly really upbeat and happy by in a way that's still pretty and nice and warm.

i quite often dont associate music with happiness or sadness. music that other people hear as depressing i only hear as being beautiful and i attach to it my own thoughts and emotions regardless of what the harmonies being used would usually conjure up in peoples imaginations.

i almost exclusively listen to what other people would class as sad music, but i dont find it sad. basicaly.

Cool -- this has been to me a really interesting glimpse into what it is like for various people to hear music of different sorts!
