Funny you have that opinion on political correctness. Most people I've experienced while living here in the bay area [sF, specifically] have been a lot more sensitive than people from the east coast. Especially in Berkeley. Took a lot of time to get acclimated to the atmosphere.

Under George W. Bush political correctness in the USA continued. He didn't attack it. But he and his dickhead chums underfunded FEMA and flood defences for New Orleans. When it was flooded, and when the majority there of black families were in dire trouble, Bush was completely fucking useless, flying over in a plane and waving like a gimp. And the authorities allowed the national guard to shoot "looters", basically starving families who were trying to get something to eat in the middle of a terrible catastrophe. It's this kind of shit that's the problem, not what people say or think or type online.
