What should I buy?

Recommended Posts

I just got payed and I've been saving up money for some new gear.

I was thinking either a midi keyboard or a set of top quality headphones.

Nothing too expensive. Around 70 euro... 100 US dollars.

I'm not really familiar with keyboards that much. Is there a big difference

between a regular as opposed to a midi keyboard? If not I'll just buy some phones.

I'm saving up for a Roland Juno DXi myself.

Not to knowledgeable on musical hardware myself. I assume the only really advantage toward getting a Midi is that with a Midi you can hook it up to a computer and do a whole lot more with it with software like Ableton, Renoise or Fruity Loops to name a few. I think Midi's tend to be a bit more professional and versatile in terms of sound as well, but I'm just a noob and don't know much yet.

A regular keyboard puts out sound. You have to capture that somehow. A midi keyboard is just a controller and doesn't necessarily make sounds by itself.

You dont need a computer for midi, you can route devices together

I'm sorry by regular I meant just a basic computer keyboard.

I know the differences and all, I'm just wondering whether I really need a midi keyboard right now or not.

I'm looking on youtube and all I really see are just a bunch of noobs making sucky hip hop beats with them.

I wouldn't want this keyboard for making beats really..

Getting a midi keyboard will completely change the way you make music. Be sure to get one with some knobs and sliders.

How so? I'm looking at this one.

You'll find yourself inputting melodies and drums live. I have an M-Audio Axiom 49, and it has done very well for the two years I have had it. If you don't want the knobs and sliders right now, you could buy the KeyRig now and then get something like the Novation Nocturn when you feel the need for more control.

I figure my DAW will take care of all the effects and such.

I'll probably go with the Key Rig for now given that it's not so much money.

Numerous people have said that knobs and pads = pwnage

You want a keyboard so, by logic: keyboard + knobs/pads = win/win = pure 1337 uber pwnage

ps: M-Audio Oxygen8 + Korg PadKontrol is what I use

I haven't got that much money to spend.

Way too expensive.

You can get an Oxygen8 used off eBay for like $60. Wasn't your budget $75-100?

The more knobs, the happier you will be. I won this one in the divorce:

I haven't even programmed half the pads but my god am I glad all those knobs are there. You can assign them to filters and resonance sweeps on virtual synths so it feels like you're knob-twiddling live while you're sequencing.

Those Evolutions come up on eBay for about $100 or so, so they should be within your budget.
