China may, in the south or in more rural areas, but there's nothing nicer than being able to walk anywhere in a big city like Shanghai at any time of day and not feel threatened. I guess that's one of the positive sides of living in authoritarian state? I'm not saying there's no violence - a stinky tofu vendor knifed another stinky tofu vendor to death near my work a few months ago - but no areas feel violent. Coming from SF and Oakland, where you can walk two blocks in the wrong direction and run the risk of getting mugged, it's really pleasant to not have to think about that.

There's some truth to that, when portugal was under the salazar regime the old people now say they were much safer back then than they are now, there must be some balance, too much freedom just leads to chaos. I always try to avoid fights, I know they don't want to play fair, they just want to kick the living shit out of me and don't want to get injured while doing so, specially here where the aggressors have more rights than the victims.

basically my pal got his belongings back and got to unload his anger back on the guy. we were restrained, nothing silly happened, no head stamping or anything serious like that.

Jesus fucking Christ, same thing happenned here to two Chinese dudes, they were being followed up the road by a bunch of chavs, me and my friend were stood on her balcony. All of a sudden these two Chinese dudes had had enough, they turnt round and starting going batshit fucking mental crazy with their limbs at this group of about 12 chavs. One of the chavs picks up a fucking "road workers" steel sign from the road works and smashes one of the Chinese dudes round the head, knocks him out cold, my friend is on the phone to the police at this point, then another chav comes from nowehere, likewise, with a fence post and knocks the other out cold.

The chavs ran off, and literally about 15 seconds later, after they've pegged it, about 50 Chinese dudes come pelting down the road and running in all directions to find them. Ten minutes later the police and ambulance turns up.
