Apple iPad; Music making abilities

Recommended Posts

Guest joshier

I've got an ipod touch for my music n that, it's good and I also pirated the best music application for it (beat maker), however I gave up on it because it's fiddly as fuck.

Now it's coming out, I'd be interested to see how many music sequencers come onto it.

Do you think they'll be any good? any potential? it's got 10 hours battery life, so it's good for portable stuff.

I got touchosc... you gotta wonder what would happen if the developer of that app made an ipad version. Insta-Lemur.

well, i'm pretty sure the first thing that would happen is that Jazzmutant would file for bankruptcy.

this is why i will eventually buy an ipad.

you KNOW this company is going to make an ipad version, or someone else will. multi-touch configurable wireless midi controller for roughly a quarter the price of a lemur.

and all the other nifty shit the ipad does doesn't hurt either... but the above is why I'm sold already.

like i said in the other thread, i just want a giant version of bloom:

i just downloaded this app and its fantastic - cant wait for the ipad.

well, 90% (i believe was the number) of iphone/ipod touch apps are supposedly meant to work on the iPad out of the box. so touchOSC should be big fun right away, just from the perspective of having the controls be larger.

one assumes, however, that the touchOSC team is already jumping on improving and enhancing their software. if they optimise it for the iPad, this kills the lemur dead.

the screen is slightly smaller, yes, but having tried the lemur, and owning an iphone, i find the multi-touch technology far superior on apple's products. with the iphone already supporting 11 fingers' contact (which is more than most of us have), this has big potential to be lots of fun.

jazzmutant should seriously consider porting the lemur OS for use on the iPad. otherwise, who would buy a lemur over this? the only potential issues i see are WiFi lag, which does happen from time to time with touchOSC... but i'd imagine it's nothing that can't be tightened up.

Awkward newbie question: has there been a thread around here about good synth/music making apps for iPhones? I'm sure there is one (if not several) so if anyone has it linked, or can remember keywords to use to search for it, can you help me out before I dive into the archives... it'd be much appreciated.

(I only just bought an iPhone last month so I'm not getting an iPad anytime soon)

I posted it in the ipad thread in GB, but someone made a MIDI interface for the iPhone. All you need is a solid sequencer, and you have a multitouch sequencer for hardware synths... Fucking great!

That screen capture looks very promising, acid1!

does touchosc have things in the vein of a traditional 16/32/64 step VC sequencer or a physics/bouncing ball style thing like the Lemur has?

if its on the app store i should probably check it out. im still a little bit skeptical on the usefulness of something like this as a midi controller.

only reason i am a little bit not sold on the Lemur style of midi controlling is my friend bought one and almost immediately afterwards stopped making full songs. I saw one dude on youtube who does a techno show with the bouncing balls patch that looked pretty coo.

that looks like an ugly pile of fuck. And it's actually MORE expensive than the iPad.

Well, there's actually hundreds of variations of this device, pricing every where from 250-1000's of dollars. Going every where to being slightly better in capabilities of the ipad to doubling and tripling it's abilities easily.

Not to mention, it fucking runs full on XP, not some bull shit iphone OS than is way more limited. (run an actual DAW instead of some wanna-be that'll have to be interfaced with other stuff to become useful.)

Also, I don't see how one black screen that can show anything could be much uglier than another, or how that matters considering the fact it's just a GIANT SCREEN. (see buying TVs, only thing that may matter is a silver or white border vs. a black border and general size, no one cares about kind of plastic or metal they used for the casing because you're watching a TV not looking at the area around it.)

Also, I'm just pointing out that the iPad is not anything new to any degree what so ever, and is just the first one to legally run some version of a Mac OSx which isn't that great, and people could probably run a full max OSX on a companies XP tablet. I also just think tablets are kind of lame in general and I'd rather just use a netbook at that point.

what the fuck. I wish my ACTUAL EMX-1 had a loop function for pieces of long patterns the way this $10 app does.

so how do you turn knobs on a touch screen? twisty finger gestures?

no mod-delay?! if they had kept one effect, that should have been it.

Yeah the electribe mod delay is class.

seriously cool, if i didn't already have an Electribe i would consider it. although i can see Korg charging at least $50-100 for it.

Positive Metal Attitude

I haven't paid much attention to the i-pad. But being multi touch makes me a bit more interested.

However, how in the hell did apple fail at adding flac support. Are they really that threatened?
