Guest ezkerraldean
on a roll with shit like Focus, Trace, Rick Wakeman, Steve Hillage, the older Mike Oldfield and this 1984 album by Anthony Phillips who used to be in Genesis. i grew up on this stuff. and Jarre too. barely listened to stuff like this since i was about 9 though. it's probably why i later got into teh IDMz and electronical musics. RECOMMEND ME MORE SHIT THAT'S GOOD LIKE THIS Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/53263-instrumental-prog-rock-recommendations/ Share on other sites
The Green Kingdom
Ashra - New Age of Earth (closer to the Hillage stuff) Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour (more prog-rockish with crazy drumming by Phil Collins!) sidewinder
Änglagård - Hybris Dün - Eros Schicke, Führs & Fröhling - Symphonic Pictures There's a ton of great stuff out there too that has vocals but is maybe 50% or more instrumental, but the above albums are all instrumental. Guest bigs
this is probably missing what you're going for by a bit, but "tortoise" is one of my favorite bands. ever. i'd probably pit them as post rock, but it still stands that they are one of the most talented instrumental bands out there right now! their '09 album (beacons of ancestorship) was awesome, but i'd start with their early stuff like "tnt", "standards" and "it's all around you". sidewinder
Oh I just remembered more: Pekka Pohjola - Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva, Harakka Bialoipokku, Keesojen lehto (this one apparently with Mike Oldfield), and Visitation All great jazz/rock fusion/progressive albums. He was the bass player for the Finnish prog rock band Wigwam. Of the four, I think I appreciate the Mike Oldfield one least. Khan - Space Shanty This one's not instrumental but perhaps mostly, and if you like Steve Hillage then what the fuck, you need this because he's in the band! The Blue Effect/Modrý Efekt - Svitanie, Modrý Efekt & Radim Hladík This one has some vocals but they're Czech and the instrumentation is so damn good, I have to include it. Beautiful album. I could say that about countless other prog albums though (minimal vocals/great instrumentation). Might as well include both of the albums I love by them. Igra Staklenih Perli - Igra Staklenih Perli This one is space-rockish prog from Yugoslavia. Short album with not-so-great production, but it's good. Guest ezkerraldean
this thread's probably more a search for shit my dad fed me when i was a kid, more than actual new music. just remembered Tomita and his incessant Debussy synth covers, also (theme from?) Boat Weirdos (i swear it was an actual film, i remember watching it, or at least watching something that i thought was Boat Weirdos when i was about 8) by Joe Walsh. bah. keep it coming anyway Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/53263-instrumental-prog-rock-recommendations/#findComment-1238137 Share on other sites
Guest Wall Bird
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King I'm pretty sure prog was born with this album. Feel free to prove me wrong, though. '21st Century Schizoid Man' is my favorite first song from any band - ever. Frank Zappa - Roxy and Elsewhere Contains the best half hour of prog I can think of in the tracks 'Echidna's Arf of You', 'Don't You Ever Wash That Thing', and finally 'The Bebop Tango (Of the Old Jazzmen's Church). Come to think of it, anything of Zappa's from 1970-1975 is likely to fit the bill. Guest Masonic Boom
No, I mean the original musical sense, not the WATMM sense. For someone who loves prog and noodling as much as I do, I have an almost irrational hatred of everthing jazz. Except for Sun Ra. Sun Ra isn't jazz, it's cosmic music beyond pitiful human concepts space and time and genre. Guest Z_B_Z
albert ayler was just as cosmic as sun ra. maybe coltrane in his later years Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/53263-instrumental-prog-rock-recommendations/#findComment-1238657 Share on other sites
Atop
agreed..... but... Autechre is the new cosmic..... Guest nene multiple assgasms
I don't know why you would like sun ra but not any other jazz. he wasn't that original. of course his output was very eclectic, too. some of his stuff was just paying tribute to old swing.
