I STILL MAINTAIN THOSE ARE HIS DAMN VOCALS.

I no longer care if it was spectral mapping or ring modulation or pitch shifting or if he stuck his head down the toilet while singing. They are his vocals.

mr. james obviously had a good ol' time coming up with fun, weird things to do with vocal samples. recordings of his own voice are easy to acquire, there's probably plenty of recordings of friends and family... and vocal samples from where ever.

It could simply be that the turned sound into image, fiddled with said image's color and color saturation in a way that was essentially shifting whole harmonic series, and turned the image back in to sound. I'd try it if i had a Mac. The PC alternative, Coagula, is pretty shit.

haha i'm not criticizing you all for thinking he did the vocals... i truly think he did.. i just think he messed with it in some sort of way to produce the unique voices. it was funny to see the thread come full circle to "i think he did vocals and tweaked it somehow" when that somehow was what i was trying to find in the first place :p no harsh feelings, i love the music i'm just curious about the tech behind it.

for the record, all vocals on aphex twin tracks are performed by joyrex.

If Joyrex did the vocals i think they are quite good

is joyrex midi sync'd by default or do you have to do mods? been thinking of picking one up off ebay...

found a lot of good info suggesting this is heavily based on a discrete convolution. gonna work out a solution.

where did you find this info?

i ended up finding a plugin written for supercollider that created spectral envelopes and could apply them as filters. after picking through the code a while, i stumbled upon the convolutions. i'll post more info when i'm back home!
