My current setup is a Thermalright TRUE (looks like an aborted transformer) with 2 120mm fans working in a push/pull system. It keeps my overclocked q6600 quite cool and it is also very quiet.

current setup:

cpu: q8300 (gonna overclock soon)

ram: 6 gb ddr3

hdd: seagate 500 gb

gfx: ati radeon hd 5850

but ye, tom's hardware is probably the premier site for this bidness, tho anandtech.com is decent as well. and i'll repeat what others said, it's all about teh newegg. :sorcerer:

I agree with chaos on this... it's not worth it to self-assemble a shit computer, but it is def. worth it to self-assemble a proper rig. I've put together my last few computers for MUCH less than they would have cost in stores. my current main computer would be something like 4 grand had i bought it from a chain---whereas i paid only 2500 with shipping included for the parts.

Also, you can hang around Tom's Hardware Guide and get advice on what parts would work best with what (and most importantly what DOESN'T work with what:)

for the OP. I would go to Tom's and check out their fan section.

Wow. Well Im thinking of getting a desktop soon. I was looking to spend somewhere between 900 and 1200 (euro) on a desktop. Would it be worth my while getting all the info and building it myself or for that budget should I just say fuck it and buy from dell.

Mate of mine who worked in dell said to always buy the 2nd latest model and upgrade it so its basicly their latest. Which I usually do anyway but probably doesnt save you that much.

You'll spend at least $300 more on something like a Dell, which rips you open for computers that have hardly enough RAM , etc., to begin with. You get much better and reliable parts by buying them individually than a box that was put together for marketing and selling to huge masses of people. It's not that hard either - most of it is like finding the right shaped plug and snapping it in. The only thing is making sure each part is compatible with the other parts. At sites like NewEgg, you can order every part and have it shipped all at once. That shit was like Christmas X1000 when it arrived.

Antec nine hundred clear gaming case

XFX nForce 750i/9300 775 mATX Motherboard

Intel Core2 Quad 2.66 Ghz

4 Gigs OCZ heat-shielded 800Mhz RAM (soon to be 8)

Western Digital 500 Gigs SATA HD w/ 32mb onboard

24x SATA multi optic writer

OCZ 700 watt blue LED fan cooled power supply

6 120 mm blue LED variable speed cooling fans

1 200 mm exhaust fan

Runs great, and built it for less than $700 ...and it looks bad ass. I've since added a few extras, including more fans (still need a new fan controller).

If the extreme i7 wasn't $1000, I would've gone that route... but no way I'm going to spend more on a single processor than I would on an entire build.

^truth. even tho the socket 775 is now end of life, i still only have a q8300 and it gives me peace of mind knowing that there are still plenty c2quads such as the q9550 which still deliver very decent performance...nowhere near i7 levels, but that's what overclocking's for. worse comes to worse, imma just get a new mobo lol. :emotawesomepm9:

Why do you need the extreme? I just built an i7 920(OC'd to 3.8gHz)system with 6gB of RAM and a terrabyte HDD on the cheap. I also added in another 9800GTX+ 1gB that I got used on eBay. It doesn't have to be super expensive to get quality performance, especially if you plan ahead somewhat and give yourself things to build off of (cases, psu's, hdd's)

I'm with you hautle... I've got the i7 920 with same ram and it runs really well. I went with the radeon 4850X2 though.... very sick. planning is super important, this isn't going to be your last computer so you need to buy quality where you might not upgrade - like in case, PSU and optical drives (once you get blueray).

CM690. Good reviews, good price. One of those will probably be my next case.

I had an Antec Sonata. Power supply failed, and the front hinge broke. Wouldn't recommend their stuff.

My build sounds like a hairdryer when it's on, running 4 120mm fans, and I love every bit of it. Why do people hate white noise so much?

because of extremely sensitive condenser mics.

I have an Antec P182 which is a mid tower and doesn't have a bay window or any of that crap... all black and sleek, no flashing lights :) It also dampens sound very well; she it dressed how I like my women, sleek and quiet.

Yeah, I'm using a Sonata 3 right now. The PSU failed, but I have a better one now that'll be good for a future build, and the side panel seems to have warped, so every so often I'll get a bzzzthrrrrmmm as it vibrates. The P182 looks nice and the CM690 II has some good features. I won't be putting together a new one until after summer, so plenty of time for research. I wonder at what point a q6600 g0, 3rd party hsf, motherboard and 4gb ddr2 bundle won't seem so tempting secondhand, as I'd like to make some cash out of the current build to finance the future one.

the only thing the i7 really has to offer over less insanely priced iXX processors is that the overclocking multiplier is unlocked. such a fucking cynical move on intel's part.
