I'm not familiar with last fm. Can anybody tell me in a few words why I should get an account ?

it lists what music u listen to (artists/albums/tracks) and u can make friends based on ur music compatibility. Also it is a great way to find new music!

And how does it know what I'm listening to ?

u download like a 2mb program which is called the Scrobbler and it just says what u are listening to throught itunes/winamp/wtv.. also it scrobbles ur iPod as well.

its pretty smart - i like it - found great music because of it - gives u recommendations n shit

If you use winamp there's also a plugin that works.
