and why does that matter? cause they're smooth?

it matters because automation can sound very different when you switch between a linear and a non-linear curve. for example in my music when i do volume automation on tracks i rarely just do a straight line, but rather do an exponential curve as it fades in, i think it's much more musical. think 111222333444555666777888999 vs 111111122222333444555667789.

it would be nice to have in live in a "click and drag" fashion, but you can come close enough by just using multiple points in your curve.

I guess my question is how is it different from say turning off quantization and recording automation data for your fade in while doing it by hand? Couldn't you achieve the same results?

yes and no. you could if you are a great mixing engineer and can really ride the faders, but personally i'm quite obsessive and i always end up going in and tweaking with the mouse anyway. i find in electronic music a lot of the coolest modulations are very difficult to do by hand, same as a sequenced synth line as opposed to a played one.

while using the Electribe with LIve, do you try to automate stuff from Live? I know Electribes use NRPN. In live there is some vague reference to NRPN stuff, but I haven't fucked around too much with it. If it's not possible I guess I'd just use midipipe or something.

My Tetr4 uses NRPN data and I can automate everything through live. The only problem is when you use it as an external instrument you can't hand edit the automation, it only records what you do (turn knobs, push buttons etc). If anyone knows of a way around this I would be really interested!
