Uninstall it. Or if it turned up after a windows update then go to add remove programs and get rid of that particular update. Or it could be a virus...get malwarebytes and scan with that. Always works a treat when I have used it and its free for like 12 days or something.

eidt actually it looks like it is a virus, this might help - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-2010

i havent had much success with malwarebytes fully removing all traces recently of any of these fake av scams. I got a clients machine totally clean of one of these just booting and scanning from the kaspersky rescue disc.

Try running Last Know Good Configuration.... tap F8 as your computer is turning on and you should see the option in the Safe mode menu. Restore to a day before you injected the shit bits. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't because most malwar is smart enough to inject itself into your restore points.

haha my mate just had this

there's tons of this scareware shit that goes about.

best thing to do is take out your harddrive and put it into another machine to run full scans on it.

make sure you have all folder permissions so the scan gets everything.

there is manual deletion guides on the net too, it's quite a popular one at the moment.

you don't need to format and shit, just make sure you read up before you delete certain things!

good luck sailor

Yeah I had to do this with my computer a while back as some fuck virus deleted some part of windows that boots it up. So scanned it and had to do a fix with the XP disc and up to now its been working fine. hopefully yours won't get that bad. Let us know if malwarebytes helps you out. I have fixed 4 laptops recently with the help of mwb.

Burn your computer til there's nothing but metal shards and ashes then build a new one. It's the only way to be sure...

once a machine is infected, there's no way to know for sure it's clean. at best, you can scan it for known threats and try to remove them, but there's no guarantee you aren't missing some new stealth keylogger.

Guest Ron Manager

I had this recently. Do this: http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-xp-antivirus-pro-2010.html

Except ignore the last thing about using Spyware Doctor, you have to pay for that. Run the reg file, reboot, scan with your existing tools.

Also if it helps, while doing this you can temporarily close it in Task Manager, it's the process 'av.exe'

As chaosmachine this is not guaranteed but it has sorted it out for me at the moment. I have acquired it twice, both from when I visited a torrent link on The Pirate Bay. No idea how or why, but basically I don't use PB anymore.

Guest futuregirlfriend

like chaosmachine says, backup your documents and wipe. you can probably get everything running again in about two hours. trying to get rid of it will end up being a lot more frustrating, plus there's that "you can never trust an infected machine" stuff. for the future, microsoft security essentials is free and quite good.

Guest lands end road

I fucking hate these viruses. I too got one from TPB. They are getting smarter too and have a way of disabling Malewarebytes, which makes life a bitch.

I reboot into safemode with networking (tap f8 at start up) and run this program "Smitfraudfix", which temporarily disables proxy so I can access the internet without the viruses disabling my browser. I then update Malewarebytes and do a full system scan. Afetr the scan is complete, restart to regular windows mode and the virus should be gone.

A combination of Malwarebytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ) Super AntiSpyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com - yeah I know the name sounds like one of those fake scareware programs but trust me it's really good ) and Spybot S+D ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) should fix it. If that aint done it follow instructions here - http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t157596.html.

It's weird I actually quite enjoy fixing peoples machines when the are all malwared up, it's like the ultimate geeky puzzle game

why can't there just be one program to deal with every spyware/malware threat there is.

I've always wondered the same thing. Whenever a friend or someone from work needs their puter fixing I end up running at least 5 different programs to fix stuff, the length of time it takes to keep scanning everything takes ages... Hell I don't care if it's nearly a gig in size with all the malware definitions, if it fixes it I'm sold !

Just back up any important documents while you can and do what chaosmachine said. I recently had to fight a rootkit/malaware infection and, instead of backing shit up, I decided to fight it. I followed this guide http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313 and managed to get rid of all the random pop-ups. My laptop ran normally without any odd errors for about a week and then suddenly my laptop turned itself off and I was unable to boot XP at all. I gave up the fight and did factory restore. My laptop is still infected because I experience weird glitches like getting a bsod after returning from hibernate or stand by mode or the windows theme randomly changing by itself from classic to xp after start up.

You only need 1 av program. Superantispyware and Spybot (which is a shocking program to use btw) are both real time scanners, meaning they are going to seriously effect performance. I would download and run Malwarebytes (it's a standalone scanner) unistall any other anti virus crap you have and install Microsoft Security Essesntials ( http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ ). If both of those things fail to clean your computer, then I'm afraid the best option after that is to do a clean format/install

And stay away from those dodgy sites in future!

I agree with using those programs. Last night I just finished cleaning the same bullshit program. Most of the time there are ways in getting rid of these things but it takes a lot of time and research because it doesn't act the same. For instance, I couldn't install Malwarebytes because something disassociated .exe files. I had to run a .reg file that fixes it.

It also was fucking around with my network connection so i had to fix winsock.

My suggestion is try to get these files from another computer if you can into a thumbdrive. Copy them to C and work with them there. Once you get Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware going (other programs too if you need like Microsoft Essentials or Ad Aware) do a scan - Thorough - in Safe Mode. When done restart and see if that takes away most of the shit on it. I know people say don't plug in the network still...but I do at this point to update the programs. Then rescan it in safe mode. I then overlook things with HijackThis.

If it looks like its gone, depending on the damage done on the system I'll do a Windows repair. Then Windows Updates. Then tweak the sum bitch, ie., some people have adobe reader speed launcher and they don't need that shit in start up. Do a scandisk then a defrag.

Except I don't use either of them as background task scanners they're used when someone's computer (not mine) has already gone tits up to clear up the debris ... and hell what's wrong with Spybot - it's got me out of many a problem.
