thanks guys. it's amazing how every one of these looks slightly different.

With Windows (and some extent, Mac), having ClearType turned on or off makes a difference on how the fonts are rendered as well, including if the font is a Type 1, OpenType or TrueType font. The Mac has a font smoothing/display feature as well.

The biggest hurdle I ran into with unicode characters was in email (we had a project at work where they were sending out HTML-formatted emails in different languages). We could never guarantee the end user had their encoding set correctly, so to ensure it was all visually the same, we replaced the HTML formatted output with a PNG with imagemap hyperlinks for the Chinese and Cyrillic character emails.
