As far as I can make out, Merton did it first, and lots of people though Merton was Ben Folds, but he wasn't, but Ben Folds heard about the whole thing anyway and thought it was neat, so did a tribute to Merton

Merton's songs and lyrics are funnier, plus he spontaneously improvs 'Fireflies'!

The 'Fireflies' bit is much less impressive without the girls reaction, and the ending less funny when you can't see the Fred Durst look-alike that you're supposed to laugh at.
