IDM Funeral

I remember in the early 1990s Rick Rubin staged a funeral for the word def when he changed Def American to just American.

As you can see today Def Jam never fully recovered.

Braindance does not imply that other kinds of electronic music are brainless. It just means that it's the kind of electronic music that you sit down and listen to, not the kind that you go to a club and dance to. Really you could turn anything into an insult if you let your fear of intellectual elitism get too overpowered.

Can some brit confirm/refute this for me:

I always thought that dance was in there because electronic music (and related stuff) was just generally called dance music in england. Is that at all true. I remember finding 3 Commissions by Mira Calix in the dance section in a cd store in Oxford.

Electronic music is generally called "dance" music in the states too, for the most part. That's one reason the term IDM is still so commonly used...because it ain't dance music so people don't want to call it that. I hate the term "electronica" and refuse to use it except for acts like Chemical Brothers, Chrystal Method, etc. I stick with simply "electronic" for the most part. I quit saying "experimental electronic" a long time ago, because let's face it, most of it simply isn't experimental anymore.

Braindance does make the most sense, really. It's just hard to actually get used to using the term as a genre.

huh...that's a pretty nice quote. Assuming you didn't lift it, you should just publish a single essay so you can say "I'm an essayist like Mencken" and then submit that to one of those quote compendiums for some cash money.

P.S. I'm not being trolly or facetious, I am irl impressed no homo.

Lol? It's not that original an idea. I think there's a Kurt Vonnegut short story about a distopia where fit people wear weights to slow them down so fat people don't feel bad, and smart people wear earphones that shatter their thought processes temporarily so dumb people don't feel bad, and pretty people wear ugly masks so ugly people don't feel bad.

When people rail against the words IDM and braindance, it just makes me think they have an inferiority complex.

EDIT: btw I think you're a cool guy xxx and like reading your posts. I'm not trying to be trolly either.
