how bout they're watching it on dvd at home with the director's commentary on, and the commentary starts to address you (the viewer) rather than the characters?

these are not examples like what fred has proposed.... all of these plots involve a self-referencing and the acknowledgment of the thing as a thing (another good example is the ending of Holy Mountain by Jorodowski).

Fred's proposition seems to be to introduce a totally unconnected and totally rad new movie (die hard 5) into another movie. It's not really self-referential at all.

It's a trojan horse. Could you imagine The Quest For the Holy Grail ending with the round table members getting into the trojan horse at the french castle and then a school child gets out once it's in the castle and then the movie morphs into Home Alone 5? damn.

I actually really want this to exist. The idea is too loony not to exist. It would be epic. I reckon Die Hard 5 would only have to be 70-80 minutes long within a 3 and a half hour movie and it would make the before and after bits still seem relevant. I especially would like this to happen if everyone going to see the film just thinks they're just going to see a rom-com (although the running time might tip them off that this is not a typical rom-com...)

As long as die hard is not in any of the promos at all. It would need to be completely hidden. The ads would need to attract the sort of women that need to drag their men unwillingly to see a shit romantic comedy. Of course the guy goes because it's his only chance at a possible bj at nights end. The guy gets redemption because die hard 5 is really what they are going to see so that gets spread by word of mouth. A nice touch would be, since the movie is in real time, the couple walks home after the movie and you can hear their reviews. The girl hated it and the guy loved it. So they get into a fight and the guy breaks up with her and uses a line from the movie like yippie kay-yay, bitch, I'm outta here. That would tie the 2 films together nicely.

Series title: Bounds Green

The back-story: An immigrant-worker in London has to raise funds to put his daughter [a mixed race London girl at the end of her teenage years] through an increasingly expensive education system.

The protagonist, Raj, owns a fast-food/pizza restaurant in Bounds Green, north London.

After several run-ins with his less reputable customers, Raj is proposed to, that the inclusion of packages of narcotics in his take-away boxes, would increase the profitability of his business and invite many new clients.

Wittingly but perhaps ill-advisedly, Raj then becomes a class-A drug dealer.

There will be a number of story arcs following Raj, his daughter, his daughter's boyfriend, and some of the clientèle, as they get immersed, deeper and deeper into problems and situations of growing up and surviving in a hostile London.

With something to keep everyone in the audience gripped, the storyline will explore different avenues and possibilities, answering moral, financial and cultural questions as it weaves its path to completion.

It would be aimed at the early evening/ evening TV timeslot, perhaps at 8pm on a Thursday, hopefully capturing older kids/ early twenties folk before they log into Facebook, middle-aged parents just after they've had dinner, and younger professionals just as they return from after-work drinks.

They should love the idea as it, again, has something to keep everyone interested, a contemporary but controversial idea that should answer many relevant questions about today's London, population and lifestyles. It will, through a series of dramatic emotional twists, excite and sadden the viewer while leading them to a dynamic resolution.
