Pitchfork love bands like this because their music gives the wankers who write for them shit loads of ammunition. Its the perfect recipie for a massive wanky review, which you read but makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Pitchfork reviewers will be killing each other over who's going to get the job for it.

I love F#A#. Epic.

Pitchfork, in general, only gives high reviews to bands it helped get hyped OR re-issues it never reviewed in the first place.

i like this band. helped me into the idms (with other post rock mogwai-ish acts)

this is the oddest news. big big fan but agree with whoever said about asmz coming out of the shadows and bad timing.

post-rock is a ridiculous name for a genre though, maybe as pretentious as intelligent dance music.

that's definitely true, and i love tortoise too—though they went a bit downhill for me after Standards. but i find tortoise to be much more eclectic than most of the "post-rock" that comes to mind.

i may be wrong, but when i think of the term "post-rock", i think of music i'd describe as cinematic indie rock. and thats the kind of music i dislike—that shit wears thin so quickly.

mogwai is in a different league than most post rock imo. there are a ton of bands out there like explosions in the sky and mono but not many like mogwai/gybe/tortoise.

I like Mogwai a lot. More than most of those other post-rock bands by a country mile. My only critisim is that once you have one or two of Mogwais albums you don't need many more as they all have a similar template. Not that I am an expert on them but thats what I think anyway.

it was good but it didnt feel like they grew at all..

not sure ill be checking of the new live gigs. ive seen em twice and once was probably enough. great show but it was basically exactly the same the second time i saw them..

i need to listen to lift yr skinny fists.. havent heard it in years and theres some really moving stuff on that one (the guy talking about coney island etc)

also that reminds me, i need to check out the godspeed offshoot set fire to flames again as well. i remember their first album had some really great moments

Yeah, there's classic post-rock and there's "loud-soft-epic blast of guitar" formula post-rock, which Mono and Explosions and 90% of the genre fall under. I actually love a lot of Mono's stuff, they use better timbres in my opinion, but they are arguably quite dull.

yeah i remember when i first heard explosions/mono at the same time as mogwai and was like OMG this stuff is sooooo epic. i love dynamics and there is just not enough of it in pop, so hearing this was like "wow! real emotion!" but then after hearing all of the explosions stuff it just reminded me of me and my guitar and my looper.
