How that set you back, I'm thinking of investing in one.

 

Set me back? Moneywise? Nope - it's worth every penny! Just make sure to buy a grounder as well, because fresh grounded coffee/espresso tastes so much better because the oils and aroma doesn't evaporate as quickly as when you get all the beans grounded at once.

So how much was it? Would you recommend a particular machine? My mate has one that takes these pouches, which although makes good coffee, seems a bit shit.

I'd say that any espresso machine with over 15 bar of pressure is fine - unless you're a pro barrista and want to make love the machine while you're steaming milk. Just make sure that the water heating proces is rather quick and that the water circulation is fast because this prevents the machine from rusting. And again, buy a coffee grinder. You won't regret it. Your espresso will taste a lot better if you grind the beans yourself. Oh, and keep your beans at the very bottom of your refrigerator away from meat, vegetables and so on and make sure the bag is sealed or else the oils will evaporate.
