pretty much this.

wait a few days until there are some dead animals (cute ones though) and then you'll see the shitstorm.

I thought turtles are already washing up on the coasts and shit.

i wonder what bp's annual revenue will be after this. still in the billions, probably, because it seems like they're contributing very little to help clean it up.

Ok now I'm not an engineer, but I would hope that an engineer (what discipline?) with 25 years of experience could come up with something a little more technical than "drop a nuke on it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure".

I'm not trying to say that this isn't a terrible (quite possibly one of the biggest) man made disasters ever, but hyperbolic science does nothing to help the situation.

I read a news article today where they said they were planning to pour cement over it, after drilling a second well next to it. I'm not an engineer and I'm not even 25 but maybe the cement part is a good idea?

Quite possibly..I haven't been paying attention to any news at all this weekend, relaxing after finals. 10 days until summer term starts, you damn right I'm gonna try and enjoy myself.

Well this is going to be very damaging for the entire oil industry (if not just for image alone) and will probably be used for decades by Environmentalists when promoting alternative energy sources.

As well it should be.

Possibly, I have no idea of the logistics, feasibility or practicality of that solution.

Still, seems they need to move all that heavy gear that is on top of the leak... The nuclear option sounds absurd, but I don't really have enough knowledge on this situation to know a better way... It does sound pretty dire

using a nuke to close the hole doesn't sound particularly shocking to me. Not a big deal, look at the pacific atolls nukes were tested on, still a bit radioactive but not a lot of lasting damage. The ocean absorbs a ton of stuff - black smokers, underwater volcanoes, tons of carbon dioxide. One nuke is nothing and certainly preferable to massive amounts of oil.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

yeah, though it also seems like it could make a bigger leak maybe? I really don't know how any of this works.

But will a nuke close the hole or widen it? what size nuke to use?

dunno, the idea worked in There Will Be Blood

i don't think it'd make it wider, I'm assuming the drill hole is very deep and the point is to collapse just the top of it? But I'm talking out of my ass.

By the way I know a lot of oil seeps out of the seabed naturally, I've seen it in california. It's not uncommon for stringy black (crude?) oil to wash up on the beach, and it apparently doesn't come from drilling but from natural seepage.

haha true... that movie seems even cooler now that this happened. maybe i'll watch that tonight

I'm a bit astounded at the media's enormous focus on a car-bombing that didn't happen and the subsequent sidelining of the world's worst man-made disaster.

No news organizations are talking about how they are going to stop the leak, its only focused on how this will affect the beaches/fishing industry in Louisiana. They aren't even mentioning the possibility that it will eventually move east around Florida, destroying their beach tourism which keeps their state's economy afloat. The ecological and economical implications of this leak if it is not dealt with correctly are so massive, its hard to wrap your mind around it.

I honestly don't care about Florida's tourism, i only care about the amount of animals that are going to die because of human irresponsibility.

Fuck Multi-billion Oil corporations and their vampiric nature.

totally out of control,

, I thoroughly hope they'll find a way to stop this from contaminating the gulf stream

saying "seems too powerful, dunno if we can stop it, probably not, let's just sit back while this thing wrecks the gulf's ecosystem" is a fucking lame excuse. there's probably someway to stop the leak and, goddamnit, if the government or bp or the national guard or whoever can't think of anything, they should try everything they can, nukes and concrete and everything, before they give up and say "shit, i guess manatees are going extinct."

now, i know i'm exaggerating a bit, i know measures are being taken, but they're obviously not effective. there are so many skilled engineers and scientists out there that it's ridiculous a solution to containing the leak couldn't have been found yet.

the thing is even if a nuke would work they're probably scared to use it because of the political repercussions. So they've probably held off on that option and wasted valuable time in the process. Wouldn't surprise me.
