the Coil thread

Well the WATMM server wiped out the prior Coil thread so we may as well have a new one for people like myself who like to ramble about Coil until the proverbial cows come home.

I'm very much looking forward to getting Colour Sound Oblivion in the mail. It'll be nice to see so elaborate a package in the "flesh", so to speak, as we may have something similar to look forward to in the coming years, as Sleaz has mentioned the possibility of issuing the entire Coil catalog on Blu-Ray with "many things that could be exclusive to that set". He says he would only do this if Blu-Ray is established as a standard medium for audio playback, which may or may not be very likely. I'd imagine it could happen now that HD DVD has fallen by the wayside but only time will tell.

As mentioned in my post elsewhere in the forum, the most recent Coil news aside from CSO preorders having closed and the standard edition being imminently available is that Sleaz is getting his plans together for Time Machines II/Time Machines Legacy/whatever the hell he decides to call it. This is likely to be years away as he's getting custom equipment made to record this with. So we at least have that to look forward to.

Cyclobe (Ossian Brown and Stephen Thrower) are also about to issue their new album. I'm not sure if any of you have heard them but they're truly wonderful and very much as dark and mysterious sounding as Coil were. They're also very much an instrumental project so those of you who were less inclined to appreciate Coil when Balance was ranting over the top will like this stuff very much.

Thighpaulandra recently issued a new record, The Clisto EP, which I haven't heard yet but his last one (The Lepore Extrusion) was bloody awesome so it should be interesting.

Sleazy's SoiSong project with CoH is on hiatus for the year but the two of them will both be issuing solo records entitled SoiSong... Will be interesting indeed. Again, I'm not sure how many of you heard SoiSong but they're fucking fantastic, very alien sounding and using a lot of artificially generated sounds that can be quite irritating to certain listeners. I fucking love it though.

And lastly, The Threshold HouseBoys Choir are set to release another CD/DVD package at some point this year utilizing the works in progress that comprised the self titled Amulet Edition release with a movie that Sleaz was making about Thai temple tattooing. That record was absolutely wonderful as it was, and in that form it was work in progress so the finished release should be amazing.

so does this mean that theyre through working as a duo for good? i thought i remember reading they had material already recorded that just had to be developed more. this is kind of an odd turn of events... they need to release a live album from their last tour. ive got a boot from a moscow gig they did last year that is nothing short of stunning.

the only bad thing about the 'form..' cover is the font he uses. the image itself is pretty stunning. and id say sleazy is more hit than miss as far as his cover art is concerned. 'remote viewer' and 'worship the glitch' being prime examples of how good he can be when on form.

have you read david keenans 'englands hidden reverse'? i mostly found it to be a current 93 love fest with some coil and nww bits thrown in, but theres quite a bit of info in there that i hadnt read anywhere else.

Wow, I'm listening to Soisong right now in a hospital ward. The poor cunt in the bed beside me is brain dead, handsome young fella, smacked his motorbike into a tree, staff here call them Donorbikes. But yeah, Coil! I love them and the thought of another Time Machines album makes me smile. Cool too, that there will be two solo Soisong albums coming, I love the xAj3z album, odd sweet bit of android madness. I think I'll put it on repeat. First heard it in Jeonju Korea, massive setting for that album. Astral Disaster is a favorite of mine, not sure why, it's just on constantly.

I love Astral Disaster immensely, I can't understand the neglect from many amongst Coil's fanbase. So lush! 'The Mothership and the Fatherland'!! My goodness...

No, they're not through for good, they're just taking time away from the project this year. 2011 they'll be back to working as a duo. And yes, that Moscow gig is incredible (well, I have recordings of both Moscow gigs but they're both amazing!)

No, haven't read it, I don't know if it's still in print at the moment. I hate C93 though so I'd only really be reading it for the Coil/TG/NWW related info. I don't really get the Coil/Current 93 comparisons either; I understand that Coil got more 'pagan' sounding (if that makes sense) and less Industrial sounding but I don't think they sound a damn thing like C93, and even at his most depraved-sounding, Balance was far more interesting than David Tibet.

it took me a while to get into current 93, and although i can pretty much do without most of tibets catalogue, i find 'all the pretty little horses' to be a near masterpiece. some very interesting production flourishes from steven stapleton, and balance makes some contributions as well. i think the coil/current 93 comparisons stem mainly from the fact that tibet and balance were friends.. maybe some lyrical similarities are there but thats about the end of it..

i love astral disaster as well but it has to be the second release with the reworked versions of 'the sea priestess' and 'i dont want to be the one'.

im assuming youd dig it based on some of the movies youve mentioned liking. oddly enough, ive found stephen thrower more interesting post coil...

Not big on 'I Don't Want to Be the One', the only ordinary track on the whole record (stands out immensely from the other tracks as well, don't know why exactly they felt the need to put it on there when the rest of it was so ambient and smooth)

RB: I was just going to say the heating system’s got a tone to it.

(They both adopt bugged-out faces and stare at the table in silence for about two minutes)

SB: It sounds like Coil. Is that Time Machines? Yeah, fucking hell.

RB: It’s weird because it sounds a lot older.

SB: I can’t listen to it anymore. I can’t play it anymore. The last time I heard this it really spun me out. It’s fucking stunning this CD.

Aren’t you working with them?

SB: It’s a long, slow process.

Are you exchanging tapes?

SB: Ideas more.

RB: Yeah, throw a spanner in the works as well.

SB: Nuff respect, wicked.

What is it about Coil that you respond to?

SB: That’s the thing you can’t say. It’s about opening doorways, I think. They open loads of doorways. They don’t always go all the way into it, but they just sort of show you this doorway and it’s just such a spin out sometimes.

RB: Coil are just in a sphere. Usually it’s quite captivating. They’re quite a captive band, really. No matter what they do, there’s something in there that’s just absolutely them and it keeps you in there.

Did you used to listen to Dead Can Dance as well?

SB: Yeah, a little bit. Selective bits. Not too much of the cheesy World/ethno stuff, more the later stuff. I reckon that “The Host of the Seraphim” is gorgeous. That’s the end of what I was into. I was more into that than the instrument specialist tracks.

Did the Industrial movement mean anything to you?

SB: We didn’t come from that point of view at all. We used to go to this Hardcore club, and the DJ, who was totally decent, we were doing this radio thing with him, he played it. He played tracks from Love’s Secret Domain at 45, just totally fucking them up. He was always into weird stuff as well.

RB: Yeah, he used to torment his audience quite a bit. He’d be playing to rave crowds, dropping Coil at 45 in the mix.

SB: He was totally stunning, looking back. We bought everything they (Coil) were doing around that time and then just went backwards and tried to get as much stuff as possible. It’s so dense. They’re really into what they’re doing at a pretty intimate level. There’s only them and :zoviet*france: and The Hafler Trio that made any impression on us, at that time. A bit of Chris & Cosey too, I suppose.

Do you think you share a hermetic stance with those guys?

SB: I think it’s how you go about listening to it. I think if you’re prepared to be barraged by certain things, then you accept it as part of the plan. It starts to work, it’s pretty weird. Coil have a knack of making things that are pretty sickly anywhere else and making them totally apparent. I mean, this is absolutely amazing. It’s so fucking easy to do, but it’s totally effective.

Haha but that's by Julian Cope, of course it's over the top. Funnily enough, I own his vinyl copy of Astral Disaster. Bought it off him via Ebay a year ago.

Wow that would have been written back when he was still mates with Thighpaulsandra. TPS used to be in his band. They had a falling out after the Double Vulgar albums, due to the extreme violent/gory/masochistic photos by Sleazy that made Julian object on the grounds that he didn't wish for himself or his family to be involved with someone who would condone that sort of behaviour.

yeah i remember reading about that. cope came off as a bit of a prude imo..

lol maybe thats what made him sell of his copy of astral disaster (kinda cool that you bought it off of julian cope tho)

Lol, yeah, I have this book, he has also written a book on Lucio Fulchi, which is a beautifully designed piece. Didn't realize it was the same guy until having bought and read the books- funny when worlds collide like that.

I love "I don't want to be the one" but yeah, it sticks out like a sore thumb on Astral Disaster. Has anyone heard Astral Collapse by Angus McLise? Apparently an inspiration on the boys.

Thrower's writing a book on Jesus Franco at the moment, should be very interesting. Franco was a character and a half!! Sometimes he'd shoot three films at once without telling the studio, sneakily taking reels home after each day's shooting so he could edit them into their respective features

i have heard bits of 'astral collapse'. i know the spoken word piece that balance recites was written by maclise..

if im not mistaken, i believe he was the velvet undergrounds first drimmer..

Yeah, that's him, I don't know much more about him really. 6th Face of the Angel is a fabulous piece, certainly preempted Coil's Time Machine period.

is there any plan whatsoever to have affordable re-releases of old material?

i mean, id LOVE to have horse rotorvator on vinyl, but it seems incredibly unlikely...

Sleaz seems fairly unconcerned about vinyl. There are affordable CDs and downloads available at Threshold House but not all of the catalog is available.

oh shit some of those live videos on threshold house look really nice!

im going to wait until i can buy the shows individually... cso is just waaayy too expensive for me

woudl it have anything to do with those shitty releases of How to Destroy Angels that basically melted after a few months....or was that a cd? cant remember...

it was a CD and it was from an early common problem with a lot of commercial Cd problems called disc rot. I believe it was for Stolen and Contaminated songs and possibly Angelic Conversation (worst coil album ever)

I enjoy the Angelic Conversation, I like Derek Jarmin a lot though. I dont listen to it a ton but love the mix of performance and sound on there.
