Of course there is.

There's also more to life than hosting the fucking Tonight Show, and I think having $35,000,000, tons of goodwill, and another show in the works isn't really all that bad of a consolation prize.

Not to him, there isn't. If your life's pursuit is to host "The Tonight Show", and you are already a multi-millionaire... how is another $35M as good as achieving your dreams?

(man, that last bit sounded fruity as fuck)

If your life's pursuit is to host a talk show with the title "the Tonight Show" attached to it, and you're given the opportunity and it doesn't work out because the people that run "the Tonight Show" are morons, and then you're given the opportunity to host another talk show and make it into whatever you want, but it won't be named "the Tonight Show," and you're given $35,000,000 in an absolutely terrible econonomy where people are struggling and losing their livelihoods daily, and said plebes can't even afford health insurance, and you expect people to really give a shit about the fact that you don't get the name "the Tonight Show", then you are probably something of a fucking egomaniac and a sociopath.

Edit: I really don't think Conan wants sympathy or empathy. He's obviously disappointed, but I'm pretty sure he can see why this isn't really an issue of national concern at the moment.

Note: he also secured pretty good deals for the staff that were going to lose their jobs. And I think he'd probably direct your concerns towards them if you asked him about how shitty it is to be Conan.

that's not accurate at all. but then again, you'd know that if you had actually bothered to watch the interview that this entire thread is based upon.

Conan: "I'm fine. I didn't get screwed. People tell me I got screwed, but I'm fine."

That was my point, though.

He doesn't want to make a big deal about it. He's disappointed, but he's landed on his feet. So, he's fine with you being "awh, poor Conan," but the hyperbole being bandied about re: the State of Conan is fucking ridiculous.

The tonight show is more than just a name, its a legacy and part of american television history. Maybe not to you, but to those in biz, 'tis.

There are people even worse off than those losing their jobs in america. Why does that enter into the equation? This is a thread discussing entertainment. Not the relative tragedies of the world.

Yeah, life sucks for a lot of people. Which is why Conan gets a definite "poor Conan" from me, but I'm not going to write a poem about what happens to a CoCo Dream Deferred (does it explode?).

Perspective matters, even in the entertainment industry. Jeez.

Conan is awesome, its a shame he lost out on his dreams... I don't think anyone is crying over this baph.

Ok, fair enough. I have heard people more/less crying about it, and the epic media fluff is a bit much, so maybe I'm projecting a bit.

Blicero's post did kind of push it a leeetle, or at least it did for me when filtered through my own subjective oversaturation with all the histrionic facebook status updates on the plight of CoCo, etc, that I've been seeing lately, so I'll just beg watmm's pardon and ask to have my responses read in that context.

We can all agree, though, that Conan's a right-decent human, and Leno's a gigantic prick, so it's all good.

shouldnt stop anyone from having an opinion. i for one dont feel much empathy. he looks like he needs a vacation.

Fuck NBC!

Fuck Jay Leno!

I want a collection of all the episodes during Conan's 6 month Tonight Show reign for it was the best talk show in history!

Hopefully his new show will be on Hulu or somewhere you don't need cable to watch,

I will probably just download them every night...

I don't envy him for his money or fame, just the fact that he gets to hit on and growl at the hottest women on earth and is one of the funniest comedians/writers ever.....he earned every cent he has
