I think that seeing as The Designers Republic artwork for ae is so damn similar I would imagine two things: a) a tribute aspect and b) a congruence between Malevich's intellectual and philosophical concepts and ae's ideology in making their art. Malevich spearheaded the art movement of Suprematism, which he came up with in the midst of a particularly intense few days that led to the painting 'Black Square', which was to him the closest he could to expressing what he felt inside at that point. It's easy to write this shit off with a slur and go back to your daily business but it goes without saying that to get anything out of works like this you need to allow yourself into what is essentially a vulnerable state and allow yourself to be affected by the works. Any defense from your mind is going to detract from the likelihood of you feeling anything genuine from the pieces. Cynicism must be suspended when it's not entirely necessary because otherwise it's easy to feel as if nothing is worthwhile in any context. TwiddleBot
if you ever seen any of his representational (non-abstract) paintings, portraits, etc.. he was actually a hella good painter. you run into this a lot with the abstract visual artists.. technically precise and excellent painters but they'd rather express their emotions and conceptual ideas than show off their virtuosic technical chops with their paintings can't imagine how crazy it must have been 100 years ago to walk into an art gallery and see abstract blocks and designs all over the place. most people would never have seen anything like it at the time Edited May 26, 2010 by TwiddleBot Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide TwiddleBot's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56575-so-they-like-malevich/page/2/#findComment-1335127 Share on other sites

Guest Greg Reason
Well from the horse's mouth, the Malevich thing was nothing to do with ae. Rob said Ian from Designers Republic had very definite ideas of what to do and just went at it. Sean recognized the similarity with the Malevich works but they were cool with it.
