so i've been checking these guys out, and i have to say i like them. a little different from the mono/explosions in the sky typical post-rocky stuff. very shoegazy, ambienty, almost tim heckerish in places. plus one of them, andrew hung, is a huge IDM nerd. phantom limb is just a tad chiastic slide-ish.

they definitely fall into that 'mono-EITS-GYBE-mogwai-tortoise-65daysofstatic' kind of genre. and a lot of that music is very very mediocre (except tortoise who are immaculate).

i suppose in an area of music where a lot of bands all sound like each other, a band that sounds a little bit different tends to make music journalists salivate.

i like their choice of sounds.

Their first album is quite interesting but the newest one is gash imo.

i agree the first one is better

a lot of the new one kinda passed me by without me even noticing i was listening when i was listening if you get me

but the excellent one-two of olympians/phantom limb in the middle of the album got me. the end of olympians is marvellously epic

another great track, but it keeps reminding me of four tet, maybe a ringer b-side.

Guest ms-dos

i found the first album simple and repetitive in a bad way. they trotted out predictable melodies for way too long and the fuzzed-out guitars had the same shape and played the same role in every track. i also didn't like how the noise was basically draped over the rest of the tracks, rarely interacting with the other elements, and seemingly used to hide the fact that there wasn't all that much happening underneath.

the second album didn't wear on me so much and i think it's rather good.

first album is pretty meh, almost all of it sounded exactly the same. I only really like the first track. A lot of people hated the screamy vocals but I thought they were kinda neat.

Second album is a MASTERPIECE, I really didn't expect them to improve so much, it's amazing, buy it, listen to it, cherish it. I look forward to future releases.

I've only got their most recent album but I've been playing the shit out of it. Love the mix of the skittery beat and long form build on surfsolar. Their sound is pretty interesting. This is coming from a lover of GYBE/Mogwai etc... Seems like the genre mix I've been waiting for.

quite often - but generally only for about 30-60 seconds at a time before FB introduce other element that distracts me - i think 'hmmm these guys are really like 65 days of static, if 65dos weren't rubbish'. i'm only familiar with these albums a couple of days, shall give tarot sport another spin cos it's getting so much love. andrew hung's last fm - that's a good top 20.

Guest Ambition as a Hellridah

For me, second album would have been a masterpiece if the band had kept the "screaming voices". (Miss them in Surf Solar for exemple)

Still, Space Mountains / Flight of the Feathered Serpent are mind blowing...

loved the first album, love the second even more. Live I thought they were underwhelming when they supported Mogwai, but I'd love to see them again with their second album material.

Surf Solar and The Lisbon Maru are superb

I love their first record, have been ever since it was released. I was definitely hoping for them to evolve in Bright Tomorrow's direction, and they actually did ... and well, I was a bit disappointed by their second album. The beginning is awesome, the end is awesome, but I feel like the middle of the album drags quite a bit. The Lisbon Maru, Olympians and Space Mountain all sound quite similar and not too interesting - plus The Lisbon Maru almost sounds like a Sweet Love For Planet Earth remix... Surf Solar, Rough Steez, Phantom Limb and Flight Of The Feathered Serpent are awesome though. And they were ear-shattering and mindblowing when I saw them live last month.
