I swear you can hear them snigger when she says that. EDIT: It's an all out laugh lol

EDIT: Listening again, this is actually the best interview ever made.

Haha. I've been looking for this one myself ever since I first heard it. Thanks!

I love how Rob talks so gently and quietly and attempts fuller answers, as if to make up for Sean's rudeness.

We just turn the machines on, turn knobs, press buttons and change values until it sounds like what we want, then we hit record on the big machine and do that over and over.

^is the best bit.

I like Rob the best. :)

but i don't think Sean is THAT rude, really.

Rob can just communicate better i think. he has more patience and understanding i'd say, from listening to that.

Sean is rather 'blunt' and direct, and doesn't seem to want to talk as freely as Rob, in that interview situation.

it's like he doesn't want to be drawn into too big a conversation.. for fear of, or just not wanting to, 'go off on one', toooo much.

I didn't get the impression that they were "un-musical". I seemed to me that they have the impression that a formal training in music tends to make one obsessed with rules, and they're all about complete freedom, and just doing whatever sounds right.

That's what i see in them too. Also i see that in Plaid boys.

Having no musical training at all really gives you true freedom. There's a question of talent too, which i believe exists in these situations. True talent.

Well, I think this particular statement about classical musicians is a bit eccentric. You'd expect brilliant musicians to have a slightly odd sense of what music is about and what other musicians are about. I don't think they're right completely, though maybe they are talking about a trend. But I think you can be aware of the rules of classical music theory and use them as a form of analysis, while at the same time not letting them limit you. But I can see why they'd get the impression they have, especially considering where they're coming from and considering the weird encounters with cellists they seem to have.

I'm definitely coming at autechre from a classical point of view. I think I "get" them. I'm not sure what that means. I certainly enjoy them.

I sorta understand the thing about classically trained musicians, but I think obviously everyone's gonna approach things differently...

Like some people who are classically trained might NEVER deviate from the rules they've been taught cos they just don't have a natural ear for being able to tell what sounds good, while others might recognise where rules can be useful and apply them only when necessary. I think if I did some classical training I'd probably fall into the trap of using rules too often because currently I make up my own rules and I struggle to break away from them sometimes, just because I'm a person who likes to have rigid formulas for my day to day life and work and stuff.

think you can do good music whatever the medium or genre. Grisey's music reminds me of Autechre in some ways. the start of Vortex Temporum is like something off Untilted - a sound object gets presented which then gradually becomes complexified and corrupted before eventually turning into something else

it also sounds amazing, like Autechre...
