It's more likely a crocodile, given that they live in the same area.

I'd guess a croc decided it would be a really good idea to chop down on an elephant's trunk, and the elephant swung its trunk back in surprise.

It could be a Komodo Dragon if those elephants are in Indonesia. They're Asian Elephants, at least.
