Another fine WARP Films* funded project - good to know that Government grant money's** being spent wisely, eh?

* Assuming it's put out by WARP Films since they showed it on their news page

** Assuming it was funded like other WARP Films have in the past

First two questions:

  Quote
The A.V. Club: During the Q&A after the Toronto première of Trash Humpers, someone in the audience asked “What was the point of that movie?” You responded, “What is the point of your hat?” Do you feel any need to explain the film?

Harmony Korine: I don’t know. I’ve always got questions like that with all the films I make. I never feel like there’s any one point to the film, to anything, to any of the movies I’ve made. This one, it’s everything and nothing. It’s like, “What’s the point to life?” “What’s the narrative thread in a home movie?” It’s a collection of moments. Maybe it’s not even a real movie in the traditional sense. Maybe it’s something else. It’s its own thing. It’s hard to say, exactly. I don’t really know what’s the point. It’s like, what’s the point of a photograph? Sometimes I can try and make something up, but I think it’s better just to… it’s an experience.

AVC: Christo, the artist who did The Gates in New York, would tell people who asked the point of his installations, “There is no point. It’s art.”

HK: Yeah, I don’t understand what everybody’s obsession with “the point” was. Everything has to have some kind of a point for people to breathe easy. What’s the point of life? I have no clue, but sometimes there are things that just attract us and pull us in a certain way. Like you say, it’s art. It is what it is.

This shows that he either gave no thought to any possible good reason for making this movie or -- what would be worse -- doesn't care whether there is any good reason. But then why should anyone care about his movie?

  Quote
AVC: Some people really dislike the film, and feel its only point is for you to further the image of yourself as a transgressive artist. But at the end of the movie, when your character is driving around at night, you give him a monologue that lays out the movie’s themes in a fairly straightforward fashion.

HK: That’s as close as it gets to what I would consider an explanation of the film. Yes, they are kind of artists of mayhem. They transcend evil in this way that almost makes it into an art form, or elevates it. They find beauty in destructive behavior, and they do these horrible things—lie, murder, defecate, and hump things. They repeat them over and over. It becomes part of their vocabulary.

This shows that he either hasn't grown out of puberty and still wrecks his parents' basement listening to Rage Against the Machine CDs or that he has no idea what he's talking about. If humping things is part of a 'vocabulary,' what would -- what could -- that vocabulary be used to say? Presumably his answer would be 'to say that destructive behavior is beautiful.' But why would anybody think that? It's like the stereotypical super-villain whose one goal in life is to destroy the world: the goal has no meaning whatsoever because it's self-defeating. It's like making a New Year's resolution never to make a New Year's resolution.

Now, there might be a good reason to find beauty in some destructive behavior. People might be totally right to think that the destruction of the Berlin Wall was beautiful. But that has to do with what the destroyed thing represents. Korine says nothing about what his objects of denigration and defecation might possibly mean -- destroying and debasing bags of trash is beautiful? it has deep meaning and significance for us?

I think he owes us a reason for anyone to spend any money or attention at all on this half-baked wad of juvenalia.

I haven't seen Trash Humpers but I have read a lot into it. And to be quite honest this looks EXACTLY like that, Korine is living in fantasy land if he went about to funders going "yeah this film doesn't need a point or a reason". That in my mind is also TERRIBLE FILM MAKING, just fucking TERRIBLE, the cinematography is shit, the acting is shit, I have read multiple times that the old peoples masks are more akin to something out of a grotesque "Bo Selecta" from ye olde Channel 4 days (you have old people running around with the arms and legs of young people, fuck me I'm really convinced there Korine. You've totally suspended my disbelief of reality for your artistic masterpiece), the editing is intentionally shit (I specifically listened to him saying "We filmed most of the film as is, there was very little editing to be done). So really, what exactly makes this film good? what makes this film special?

Korine states that his film is an experience film, which is a fair point. Until of course you examine OTHER experience films and one can read into other experience films even if they are nonsensical (e.g. Eraserhead's shots of the bleeding chicken on the plate being child birth, the lady in the radiator having Ovaries for cheeks. Or another example, all of the organic vs industrial shots in Tetsuo The Iron Man, a prime piece raising the subtext of Japan's fight with itself against technology and industry and the natural...)

What have we got here? people shagging bin bags, hitting TVs andd??? singing nursery Rhymes. I'm sorry Korine but you NEED a fucking explanation for this pile of shite, you can't pull the wool over everyones eyes and expect people who were pissed off at wasting their time with it to "not get it man" or any of that other bullshit. I'm a big fan of many many films, and I'm struggling to want to watch Trash humpers all the way through as it doesn't look like it'll do anything other than piss me off.

Unless of course Korine can provide significance outside which will all suddenly make perfect sense and logic for filming and releasing what honestly looks god awful in every technical aspect you can think of (and no that isn't a "hold my hand and explain everything Korine" that's a "tell me the function of your film to convince me that it isn't anything but another shitty piece of "modern art". It doesn't sound like you thought this through much mate, prove me wrong. I want to be proven wrong.)

I may however change my mind when I SEE it of course whenever I CAN (note Can because it isn't getting much of a wide distribution and its been made for over a year, yes this shit was released on the film festival circuit last year and its FINALLY getting a DVD release all the way in September. Boy you can tell its just fantastic then if everyones in a rush to show it and the funders are holding it back for so long... right?????)

PS: Please note in the examples of other experience films I mentioned, that the only director who endorsed people stating opinions about what they believed was the significance of that directors film was Shinya Tsukamoto with Tetsuo. Lynch always stated "No one has reached my interpretation of the film"(referring to Eraserhead) which I think is just a little spin to keep people watching because the lady in the radiator with Ovary cheeks stamping on sperm is pretty clear symbolism to me and a lot of other people...

the point is that the point of art is art.

there doesn't have to be a point. it's art for art sake. i know that may not be a satisfying answer, but that's art.

You now Trash Humpers is art because a Thread about Trash Humpers became a heated debate about what is art , and the meaning of it.
