what synth was on hard normal/feed me?

Recommended Posts

hard to say. I know he had a roland sh-101 and an octave cat srm around those times. a lot of it could be samples, his bass drowned in reverb, some cheap digital rack synth, etc.

yeah could be anything really

rhodes is probably samples

the pads in beep street, it could be anything, but it sounds a bit like samples because of the choppyness in places

it can't be samples because the same sounds are all over big loda too

Great logic, lol.

i thought it was a general rule of thumb in the music business to consistently sell off/trash your hardware after the completion of an album, as well as discontinue usage of any previously acquired samples.

squarepusher has never used some samples, like the amen/think break, one more than one album, undoubtedly. am i right in thinking this??

*shits and pisses on PC,laptop, midi controller, xbox, coffee cups, cigarette butts, rca cables, rhyming dictionary*

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

so my arousal set off by this glorious statement speaks more about my steadily worsening nicotine habit or something more sinister altogether?

Wait, are you asking if it's true that Squarepusher has never used the Amen on more than one album? Because I hope you're not asking if it's true that Squarepusher has never used the Amen on more than one album.

i reckon it's a 101 with some some dense delay/chorus on it. look at the 1996 interview and you'll see what he was working with around that time period.

sorry, but a sh-101 made by roland cant make that kind of sound.. plus its a monosynth.

1. that

provides a shitload of data about that era. i've watched the clip over and over trying to ID all the bits. sh101, 303, 909 (or 808, or 727, never owned any of 'em and they look the same to me), maybe some cheap modules, records to sample, mixer, tape (slowing sounds down without making them sound digital!) and of course bass.

on that note -- can anyone ID this? noticed it watching the vid again just now.

2. he also mentions using what (i gather) is the yamaha equivalent of the Casio SK-1 in this video (hi qnio!). it wasn't bent when he held it up in the vid.

3. RDJ said he was using a Yamaha QY for years. I'm presuming that was the little composer dealios, and not the the SK-1 clone. Those buggers have a full kit of GM sounds, and it's entirely possible he used them loads, albiet slowed down on tape, rubbed sensuously, drenched in reverb... which leads us to

4. brilliant sound treatment and reverb use. this is getting more into speculation, but the cover of rotted one note he had a picture of some homemade plate reverb, and i find his reverb to be fantastic in general. tundra and beep street, eh? don't just compare the sounds, compare the 'verb. then slow it down through tape... makes sense, don't it?

i'd say close, but no cigar -- buttons to the left of the keypad are different, to pick the detail that grabbed me first. maybe a different akai S-model? once again, not something i've owned/used myself...
