ever since i first listened to ariel pink, i've sort of been attracted to that lo-fi aesthetic that he's got going on. everything about it appeals to me on some level, even the "sometimes trying too hard" aspect. i pretty much eat up anything that sounds like it was recorded on a cheap teac 4 track in 1988. and i don't even know why!

some examples:

anyone else like this kind of stuff? got any recs i might not have heard of?

Jeez louise, that Nite Jewel one I didn't make 1 minute through - It's waaaaaaay to hipster-ish for me (and I've been accused of being a hipster myself)

Matrix Metals "Flamingo Breeze" ?

Chris & Cosey - Alchemy (though this actually is old, and sorta NSFW)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I dunno. My sisX0r put out an album of this kind of thing on Ecstatic Peace, but I have to say I just don't get the fetishisation of this stuff.

It's like... we spent all of 1988 recording on a 4-track wishing we had more tracks and better equipment. And now people come along and *try* to sound like that? :wtf:

I think its because of the honesty that came with the simplistic sound, smomething like that. People who just try to sound lo-fi arent really the same, imho. But to make it clear, some were really awful, e.g. that Ariel Pink track :wtf:

I fucking love Nite Jewel. It's a perfect mix of ethereal voices on funky beats.

Shame she hasn't released an awful lot just yet, but it seems like there's some official collaboration stuff with Dâm-Funk going on right now. As for Geneva Jacuzzi, I think that shit gets old really quickly, but it's fun for a while.

Yo, my name is Saad and I don't give a fuck.

haha exactly. *throws tube amp out nearest window*

for me, anyways, i like the sound of it because it reminds me of my hilarious early attempts at recording music, which were fun despite being complete and utter failures. the sound of simplicity and innocence? i dunno.

anyways, some good stuff in here, found some stuff to check out. keep it comin' hard and fast.

yeah, for sure. i'll probably never get sick of the video for love caboose, but nearly all of her projects wear out insanely quickly.

I've loved Casiotone For The Painfully Alone for a long time. His old stuff was really lo-fo, recorded on tapes in phonebooths etc...

i love the 4-track recordings well-known artists have done. they make me think of the word "basement."

portsmouth sinfonia - hand someone an instrument they only have a vague idea how to play and have them play classical hits.

and fitting under both naivist and also kind of lo-fi, maher shalal hash baz:

(Pumice used to actually be in the band but too many americans started liking his shit so now he's over there touring all the damn time )

probably the most talented person i've ever met

plus he's kind of doing his own thing... a few parallels in NZ stuff i guess, but even then he's kind of his own little thing.

he actually comes from a whole crew of guys that were all doing the same thing from 91-96. they're all geographically dispersed now and many are pursuing other interests such as drinking themselves to death or making brilliant youtube videos. But yeah if you were part of that crew Pumice makes perfect sense...
