lo fi's cool. i think in some cases it enhances the recording but it seems like its being taken to its logical conclusion with ariel pink. kind of gimmicky imo. but i have to hear more stuff from him...

he's been in The Nothing from day one

He was the drummer for Ho Dogs and Coolies for a bit too, but he usually gets bored of playing in other people's bands really quickly  . I think he's sticking with Knox out of respect more than anything.

Watching him drum for the Ho Dogs was a massively :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: experience. He's playing with this fucking Motorhead scuzz-rock band and he's playing at like 170 bpm and doing technically incredible things like throwing in a couple of bars of 3/4 just cos he's bored, and his glasses kept falling off because he'd given abosultely no thought to the logistics of playing metal drums while wearing glasses. It was awesome.

"White" and "PumiceRaft" are fairly recent ones that have a lot of pure noise jams on them. My fave is "A Window Into A Egg" from 2001 - has a lot of his live faves on it

yeah the Plop recordings stuff was all lounge jams recorded on dictaphones or worse. they put out like 50 tapes in 3 years or something. then they discoverd King Records and started getting really terrible sounding transparent vinyl pressed :fear:

CJ is not drinking himself to death as far as i know, but he has stubbornly refused to leave Dunedin. I crashed on his floor a few years ago and it was cold as fucking fuck.

actually he's dropped a lot of the lo fi with his latest. under all that lo fi hiss is some seriously good pop writing, either way

thing about "lo fi" is it's generally more an effect of not knowing how to use your gear than of having shitty gear.

the notoriously "lo fi" Pavement album Slanted and Enchanted was actually done on 16 track reel-to-reel, in a real studio, but the guy who recorded them apparently didnt have a fucking clue what he was doing.

my band makes way more hi fi recordings now than we were making on the same 4 track 14 years ago

easily the biggest jandek lol ever.

was his intent really to do an improvised bass-slapping funk set, or did he just not really research his collaborators for the evening? and more generally, what in the fuck?

a lot of this music to me sounds like what 80s music sounds like to someone born in 1992, some of it is great but often it just sounds like really failed attempts at retro sounds

I've listened to a decent amount of Jandek and read a shitload about the guy, yet nothing prepared me for that epic post-seinfeld bass slap improv.

Well put. I posted some thread on that "chillwave" awhile back and found myself loving some artists and detesting a select few because my ears just weren't buying it. That Neon Indian guy especially, can't stand it. Could just be the shit vocals though.

  • 2 years later...

Can watmmz help me construct a playlist? I really like this track by Daedelus, which seems sort of inspired by chilly waves

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0nFYAErhk

I like some of the stuff in this thread but most of the 'chillwave' stuff is too poppy for me to really like even 2 years later.

Anyways I know there is good stuff in there. I want to make a playlist of tunes like that daedelus one. slow motion, dreamy, opiate like, pitched down snare drum, slowed down 80's samples shit. but only the best of the best. nothing sub par. i think that daedelus track is booss

Yeah looking for my stuff like that track myself - tracks that just kinda stumble slowly forward but aren't too wonky

Reminds me of these (both Daniel Lopatin/Oneohtrix Point Never)

I'd browse Matthewdavid (another brainfeeder/LA beat scene artist)'s label Leaving Records
