So during those long moments between his albums, don't complain, write your own, and try to live up to his high standards of creativity like iamabe does. :)

Thank you, but I'm happier when I zone out and make noises with my toys instead of trying to imitate RDJ.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to insinuate anyone should try to rip him off, just to live up to that level, that standard.

Though I do like the idea that aiming for RDJ and making Moby is better than aiming for Moby and sounding like poop.

Aim high, fail well. :)

I can't believe no one mentioned the quack in Last Rushup 10.

Rushup Edge without the quack - 6/10

Rushup Edge with the quack - 10/10

Ha, the bit at 5:13? Yes, it's those little extras that really make the piece. I really have to learn how to sprinkle on those kinds of bits. My favourite bit in Last Rushup 10 is the almost power chord electric guitar like noise growling in the background throughout the beginning, drenched in reverb (it picks up again at 1:59), then suddenly appearing in the foreground slightly too early at 2:28, leading into the quiet bridge. (Listening to it a bit more intently, it sounds like the foreground sound's actually something else, and really badly cropped. Interesting.) It's so simple and so effective, it really adds to the track as a whole. I never even noticed stuff like that until I first got my hands on some master tracks (Nine Inch Nails's excellent Year Zero) and managed to isolate the different components of songs and focus on each element in isolation, to then hear how they work together as a whole. If only more artists released their master tapes. Imagine being able to hear all the different channels that comprise something like Rushup Edge...

Out of curiosity, how do you rate the track from Melodies From Mars that sounds a bit like mewing cats?

Pigeon Street?

I love it. I like hearing richard's wank tracks.

I once pranked a roommate by putting pigeon street on loop while he was sleeping.

I totally agree about the "power chord" in rushup. It's an excellent texture. But for me, the star of the intro is the fucking thundering bass, those two notes with delay. One thing I regret most about selling my car was losing the woofer and listening to Rushup 10's intro as loud as possible.

When I'm at work I browse watmm alot but I never get around to really breaking down what bits I like in a track. There is so much to be said about a single Tuss track.

Guest Billov

Pigeon street is ace... but thats a caustic window track.

I think Zoe is talkin about this

imo Melodies from Mars is Richards funnest album, I just love the production qualities (or lack thereof). Everything sounds so broken.

It's quite good but abit too hectic. The excellent moments like the piano solo are way too short and unresolved.

one thing I admire about afx (and anyone else who does this really) is how he comes up with these really awesome melodic bits, riffs, sounds or whatever and then he resists the temptation of repeating them all over the song, in many cases just using it once. it really makes me want to listen the tracks more, just to hear those "bits". not sure if I'm explaining myself well.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

I have recognized this many times. I call it "Abusing the Hook". It is a sin of which many artists are guilty. If they hear a hook they repeat it and it makes the music suck. Why not instead make like 10 hooks that are all different and put them all throughout the song? My most memorable Aphex - "I'mma give you just a little hook and make you want more" is on Ziggomatic v17 at 5:05 the song comes into a climax after a build up and that High hat sound is amazing. You get to hear it 3 times and that's it. It's done. A lot of his music is based around the idea of hearing something only once during a song or so. Even in music that is similar to his the artists tend to abuse the hook just a bit more than him.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

Lots of music that repeats hooks is very good though. I'm thinking of Bochum Welt, Drexciya etc.

You're right. I love Drexciya. There is definitely a grey area here. It is a noticeable lazy habit I think in some people's music or an attempt at catching an audience. Drexciya has a really retro vibe to it though and the fact that they allegedly recorded a lot of stuff live would be another decent excuse for the repetition.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.
