The Final Cut

Dear, oh dear...

The Final Cut is one of the most disappointing movies I've ever watched. I remember watching the trailer thinking, "this looks like it might have some potential" but somewhere in process of making the movie the director decided to stab himself repeatedly in the head with a blunt knife.

Oops i meant 'Final Cut' not that shite with Robin Williams but the clever comedy take on the Dogma 95 manifesto from the same guys who did Love Honour and Obey www.imdb.com/title/tt0162958/

Speaking of Dogma 95 check out Man Bites Dog which predates the documentry genre by a couple of years yet is still the best example of this style imho.

basically anything by john cassavetes. pretty much the king of independent film. my two favorites by him-

great film about a nightclub owner forced to do a hit for the mob because of gambling debts.

from imdb-

  Quote
Ben Gazzara was unhappy with the role initially, unable to find a way to connect to Cosmo Vitelli. That changed when shooting a scene, Cassavetes spoke to Gazzara about the gangsters in the film as a metaphor for the people who are constantly trying to steal or ruin people's dreams. Cassavetes started to cry and Gazzara saw that playing Cosmo was representing John Cassavetes and the movie was a metaphor for the director's struggles for his own dreams

i think it was made with studio money, but ill list this one anyway. from the director of 'performance'.. in some ways i like it better than that film. the end is insane.

shadows by cassavettes. scored in part by mingus though his contributions are a little ambiguous as he reportedly failed to meet deadlines. i also want to re-emphasize the awesomeness of bad boy bubby! i just wish someone else has seen this to underline that it rules...

ah and one more...even dwarves started small by herzog

great film but probably the only one worth watching from claire denis. everything else ive seen from her has been a bit shitty... 'trouble every day' is worth it for the soundtrack and thats about it.
