FS1R Demo bits.

Synth demos are usually whack so take from this example and extrapolate what could potentially be done with it in good hands.

Yum yum. :braindance:

its hilarious just how LITTLE information and demos of this unit exsist on the internet. this is the only video i could find when i saw the FS1R pop up on my local craigslist app, i took a chance (not a huge chance mind you, the guy was selling for $300 and the last one that sold on ebay was $700) buying it because of how much i've heard it praised. Up until i actually played with it myself everything i actually heard of it sounded very underwhelming.

I must admit a lot of the synths sound quite digital...not just because they are FM but also the way they are processed with obviously digital reverbs. no doubt digital reverb gets used all the time on nearly everything these days but it was definitely much more noticeable on move of ten + quaristice.

Yeah, there's more reverb. Saying digital reverb is almost like saying digital video, though. The only analog reverbs in common use anymore are spring reverbs and of course, room reverbs (captured with mic.) Maybe you meant something else by "digital?" Sorry to nitpick.

Loads of producers still use EMT plate reverbs. Some company just started manufacturing a wooden plate verb as well

FM8, really? Wouldn't have guessed. I kind of assumed they were using a conglomerate of hardware FM synths.

they are for sure, i just don't remember which ones. There was a recent interiew post Oversteps where they fire off about 3 obscure hardware Yamaha FM synths they used on the album, none of which started with a 'DX'

Do you have a link to the interview?

Yamaha only released the DX,TX,SY and FS1R series as far as i know.

And IIRC the SY series was more wave/vector-oriented, though they did have limited FM capabilities.

In that vein, if not actually part of the SY series, was the table top TG33.

There were some weird non-Yamaha FM synths from the 80s, though, like the Korg DS8. And the casio CZ/VZ series was similar, though not actual FM.

the flagship SY99 and SY77 did have a full blown DX mkII engine but with more feedback options but somehow i can'r see sean n rob messing around with an old workstation

is it possible they ran the FM8 at a really high fidelity like 192khz or something? Just a guess

I have one of those, it actually sounds pretty cool. Nice pads and such, demo song is fucking awesome too.

EDIT: the tg33

my suspicions about oversteps tour setup

some observations:

sean was using the same controller that rob was (killamix).

rob has some rackmount gear that he was using, but it was pretty hidden in the available tour photos. my guess: a G2.

sean also appears to have another bit of rack gear under his Nord. i have no idea what it is, tho.

ah, ok!

The Lead 2X has only one MIDI input. They could be using a merger but that can cause timing sloppiness, especially with a lot of data coming down the pipes.

I'm guessing the computers are still being used as audio sources.

I just want to pick-up on the conversation a page back that Awepittance and Soundwave touched on about the FS1r and whether AE would bother to use other FM gear when the FS1r is so powerful. Something I'll do from time to time is to take a patch that I've programmed on my FS1r and try to replicate it as much as is possible on FM8. Or, maybe a patch from Reaktor's FM4 in FM8. Or vice-versa. Maybe I'm little OCD about things like that but to me it's interesting to hear the minor differences between the various synths.

I don't think it's too weird a leap of the imagination to think of B&B doing similar things.

As a side notion on the FM synth front, I was reading up on the Korg DS-8 as I saw one going for cheap on the SOS Reader Ads. Anyway, listening to some of the demos of the synth over at the Sealed Deep Synthesis site and I was struck by how Autechral it sounds in places. Especially the Decayed Sounds section - check the "FM Pluck with aftertouch". Intrigued me anyway.

that's funny you've tried that. I do the same thing sometimes with other gear. For instance try to recreate a VSTi Aturia 2600 patch on the real-thing, sometimes it surprisingly sounds identical sometimes it sounds wildly different. Would love to hear some tracks you've made feature the FS1R. Have you used the software editor? So far i cannot get it to work

With moving houses and such like I didn't have my gear setup properly for a couple of years and so it's only been in the last 6 months that I've had easy access to my FS1r - I've not finished any songs since then. I recall having problems with a few FS1r editing utils over the years. However, this one:

Worked without any problems at all. PM me if you have any problems and I can check settings on my computer in the studio.. well, spare room with my gear.

The algorithms are dizzying...!

yeah the amount of algorithms on it is pretty ridiculous, also the calculator like LCD screen interface is pretty funny when they actually visually display all the algorithm combinations, they just look like tiny little pixelated squares all stacked in different configurations
