Miyazaki hates all technology anyway, this isn't surprising at all, I think the most surprising part of it is that he used a sexually explicit simile.

The animators at Ghibli aren't even allowed to bring cell phones or ipods into the studio. I wouldn't be surprised if his next film doesn't use computers AT ALL.

I find his technophobic stance a bit bewildering since his movies can be watched (and he profits) on said "masturbatory" devices...

I think Miyazaki can say whatever he wants. He made Spirited Away, he can say anything. But maybe he hates Steve Jobs over some contract negotiations that went bad. Or maybe he thinks human interaction is a good thing and Ipad removes some of it.

Jobs is on the board of Disney (via Pixar). I think Disney still has a stake in Ghibli's distribution, but I wouldn't be surprised if Miyazaki has some artistic. . . issues with the company.

The mandatory crappy voice acting on the theatrical English dubbed release of Spirited Away? lol. Hell, I dunno. I can imagine Miyazaki not being thrilled with any amount of outside control, but it's just speculation (obviously).

I thought Spirited Away's dub was alright actually... and I prefer the English dub on Howl's Moving Castle (the film feels too European to me for Japanese voices).

Miyazaki is a legend, there's no questioning that... and he's one of my animation heroes... but one of those heroes I wouldn't wanna meet. He'd probably hate me, and all of us hehe... anyone who regularly posts on an internet forum. I don't entirely agree with his world views.

I read an interview with him, where he complained that no one could animate that scene in Spirited Away where Chihiro puts the medicine in Haku's mouth (as a dragon) properly because none of them had a dog. A few of them said they had cats and he just got annoyed... what the hell is wrong with having a cat? Since when are cats inferior pets to dogs? Should I be complaining about people who keep birds or fish?

He seems like he looks down on you if your life isn't something like this:

You grew up on a farm, worked really hard and did school at the same time. You left home when you were 16 to work down in the ol' mine. You found a girl and married her when you were 18. You never even heard of a computer till you were in your 20's, when you moved to the big city. You don't feel comfortable there but you need money to support your family. You struggle, working long hours at an office job, enough to send you to an early grave but because you've learnt to work hard since you were born it doesn't affect you. You long to move back into the country. Eventually after moaning about it for 50 years you finally manage to buy a house in the country and retire there.

I wouldn't say he was completely right. Masturbation is fun and healthy whereas the Ipad/pod/pid etc. Is just a complete waste of time and space.

I dunno, once some good software comes out for it, it will be a cheap, portable multitouch controller with a customizable interface. Then I can masturbate bidule, renoise, and protools just the way they like it, anytime.
