NME loves Autechre

Recommended Posts

Not earth shattering news but good golly. Clicking through the NME best albums of the year so far (yep I'm bored) and Oversteps makes an early appearance. My opinion of the indie-hipster magazine has slightly risen.

'welcome to their sometimes harrowing, often hopefull city of sound' Is a fairly nice description.

They've certainly changed their tune, before any Ae album would be lucky to scrape above two stars in NME. I'd always love reading their Ae reviews due to them missing the point of the albums on about 15 levels ....

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I'd take a mad guess and say that your average NME scribe hasn't heard Confield. Fuck knows what would be spinning out of control if he heard that. Proberbly not a car. Something crazy, something satanic, something digitally dark.

I used to read The NME back in the day. Wasn't too bad when it was like a newspaper. Now its all glossy and shiny, and sponsered by hair products. And is all-in-all rather gay.

But I did stop reading it when I was 25, so perhaps I just got old, cynical and miserable.

Anyway enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Autechre records are purchased solely by bald men in expensive anoraks who would masturbate to a car alarm if it was re-mixed by a German. This impenetrable curtain of misanthropic noise - released with an accompanying three-track DVD that features a squabble of hopelessly pretentious video "interpretations" - is typical of the menopausal electro-manglers' dogged refusal to bow to convention and produce anything of interest to anyone not either a) bald or b) German. It bleeps. It skronks. It krrraaaanks. But mainly, it blows like a ruddy awful hurricane. Remember, kids; if it sounds like a festering hillock of tune-shy bum-wank, it's because it IS a festering hillock of tune-shy bum-wank. Avoid as you would a bald German.

'dogged refusal to bow to convention' is a good thing though surely.

The NME was OK when it was a paper, but I grew to loathe it a few years after I started reading it. Used to hate the way they'd build shite bands up, only to knock them down again or completely forget about them just as fast (i.e. Birdland, These Animal Men). For years all that mattered to them was how bands dressed and had their hair, whether or not they were actually crap was neither here nor there. Maybe just coincidence, but it went downhill fast after they started censoring the swearwords.

Same as mate. When it was a paper it was pretty good. If I remember correctly it was quite edgy and slightly rebellious. When it got turned into a glossy magazine and was sponsered by L'o'real hair products and then became Smash Hits (teenage music magazine from back in the day) for trendies. I decided to save my money.

I'm sure the NME gave Confield a glowing review. Then criticised Draft for being too unmelodic.

Yup, 8/10

Coincidence?

KID A was released in 2000. Confield follows in 2001. NME sucks Autechres cock and gives glowing review proberbly because Radiohead are giving Autechre big love in interviews. The following years NME after building them up, it does what all UK media does and knock them the fuck down.

They were also very unkind towards Untilted having a the lowest metacritic score a 20 out of 100!

Unlike UK music which is something to be proud of, our UK media is always and will forever be something to be ashamed of. Totaly spineless.

I went to university with their current reviews editor, and undoubtedly bored her tits off droning on about AE on a number of occasions. I like to think this may have influenced the magazine's current stance.

Well put there. And yeah, I seem to remember it had a bit of a rebellious streak too when I first started reading it. Can't even bear to see it in shops nows.
