Because it's what Autechre/Aphex/Boc/Squarepusher, etc have come to be known as collectively. You say IDM and most people automatically think of those artists, so it gets the point across, even if it is a completely idiotic term.

Few stories:

Was at my place in a panic mode with a girl in my group and the whole time we were writing a script for a skit for our French class (we filmed it the next day, the day before it was due, I edited the whole thing in class even). While writing it, Confield then EP7 played and she liked both. She later said when I told her how excited I was about my Oversteps vinyl that "instrumental music is the best music" and I later learned one of her favorite bands is Cocorosie. Fun times.

Other girl I know really likes Detrimentalist and United Acid Emirates. I haven't shown her much else that I can recall. She likes acid stuff though.

My little sister "hates" RDJ. She a dumbo, and I am pretty sure I could get her to like something by him.

She seemed to like some of Hello Everything.
