Very cool thread. I have tons of tapes, mostly underground releases from the 1990. I also have two tape decks, one from JVC and the other is a Onkyo high end tape deck I have found for 10$ at a thrift store! It lays tapes very well and it doesn't sound bad, most of the tape I have that has lofi sounds are the ones mass produced or the very underground stuffs that is just badly recorded. Otherwise it really sounds great! I use a cheap Pyramid equalizer to bring up the bass and high end, most of the time the hissing is ver very low, even on older tapes I have that are from the '70! If it was well recorded, it will sound good.

I saw a Onkyo 3-head deck (TA-2058) and I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not buying it. A lot of the bad playback/quality of tapes can be attributed to cheap decks and poor dubbing.

Saw a CL posting where a local record shop was giving away a bunch of type I tapes, mostly 90 min TDKs, someone dropped off that they couldn't sell - all home dubs. I checked it out, they were all in neat stack-able boxes so I hauled them off. Figured I maybe would get 100 tops.

I just did a quick count of one, multiplied it by the number of boxes I have and I'd say a conservative estimate would be 500+, probably 600 or more tapes. So in other words, I think I'm obliged to start a tape label.

We released this recently... some sample heavy, instrumental Hip Hop by Koreatown Oddity. Cassingle style.

I saw that in the new releases subforum, not long after I found his soundcloud after I saw Matthewdavid was doing a live show with him. A real mixtape. It's on my list of tapes to order when my next paycheck comes in!

Matthewdavid, Mothership Collective, The Koreatown Oddity, and DJ Stephen R. performed that night. We (the label) helped put it together, but I didn't make it to the show.

The Koreatown Oddity is self releasing a beat tape this monday called "No Health Insurance"

Jonwayne's cassette series on stones throw?

I haven't personally heard the tapes but the samples sounded great - neat designs too (they got sued for the top one btw). When the first tape was announced (including walkmans with the first batch of orders!) it was funny seeing some fans of Stones Throw wig out over the cassette format - some loved it and some hated it.

I've been seeing a few watmmers release projects on the cassettes recently, from the Architects + Heroes release of Koreatown Oddity to a couple I noticed in the new and upcoming releases section. Maybe we can bump them here? My cassette collecting hobby has merged into my effort to buy more physical releases from small labels and underground producers, so I immediately take interest in anything released on tape (and my wishlist is growing steadily) and I've noticed other watmmers are into the format as well.

So in other words, if you or colleagues are releasing anything on cassette, maybe we can pin it in this thread...

I don't have many tapes, but I recently bought a turntable with a tape deck built in because the few I have are really important. I have several mixtapes from friends ranging back to when I was 13 years old, and a could of recordings of my old band (from when I was 16 or 17 years old). I'm sure if I come across any decent tapes in charity shops I'll buy them, I like that it's hard to forward through tracks.
