This morning I was in the mood to listen to some early Talk Talk. This eventually turned into "I'm going to listen to all of Talk Talk's albums in a row today." I'm up to Spirit of Eden and, well, it's been a damn good day.

Such a sonically diverse band. Their later stuff just blows my feeble lil mind. It's so out of left field for what was essentially a synth pop band to just start doing these long, emotional jam-outs. Proto-post-rock, you might call it. I'd kill a baby to sit in on the recording sessions for Spirit of Eden or Laughing Stock. Or hell, even .O.Rang sessions. Darkened room, incense, ah man, must have been quite a thing.

So, yeah. Talk Talk ruled. If you didn't know, now you do.

Questions? Comments? Theories on where Marc Hollis fucked off to after his solo album? You know what to do.

spirit of eden and laughing stock are that rare thing: flawless albums. hey kate bush, have you heard missing pieces? it contains the rest of the feedback improv from that laughing stock track that cuts out abruptly. this thread made me put on laughing stock; it's like a really sad balm to the soul.

i wonder how long it took to persuade mark hollis to make a video to this

modey: the other great unreleased one from asides besides;

paul webb collaborated with beth gibbons on her solo album, it's very later talk talk in places (and very good):

and mark hollis' solo album is excellent, even though it's so fragile it sounds like it would fall to pieces if you touched it:

Well put, +1.

he did an interview with the sunday times culture supplement around the time of its release where he talked about hitting a single note on a piano for about thirty hours, exploring the dynamics. SoE/LS are kinda the sound of mark hollis losing his shit, and the colour of spring is sort of the soundtrack to his retreat into hermititude. i wish he'd make more music.

it took me so long to realise that mark hollis' solo album was recorded entirely with acoustic instruments. i really love the track with the 'smudged' female vocals, anyone know who that is? i don't have a physical copy of the album (vinyl goes on ebay for $$400 ugh)

i think it's this one (at work so can't watch youtubes):

that's one of the best from it. the whole album is close-miked to an almost uncomfortable level - on some tracks you can hear him adjust position in the chair he's sitting in.

the bass/drum stuff on this track

yeah im up to that track right now actually kaini. i was gonna listen to the two .o.rang albums so i did it all chronologically because im weird and sleep deprived but i forgot they were on my now-dead hard drive so i had to download them and its taking forever.

seriously, though. everyone should have a day where they just listen to nothing but one band's evolution all day long. it's pretty awesome. i did it last week with OMD, but i could only make it like halfway through junk culture because fuck that album is awful. the fairlight CMI was the worst thing to happen to that band.

I absolutely adore Talk Talk. I've got all their studio records, first three on vinyl and the rest in CD. I'd sure love vinyl copies of Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.

I recently came across a band named Bark Psychosis which released a record, Codename: Dustsucker, back in 2004 and it featured Lee Harris as a drummer. Very, very later-Talk Talk inspired and SUCH a great record.

The drums story on Codename: Dustsucker is a bit odd. Supposedly the original drummer refused to take part in the reunion but granted them permission to make use of unreleased drum jams he had done - which they duly wrote new songs around. Or something.

Anyway, your Bark Psychosis adventure should always start with the first album "Hex"

Dustsucker is amazing in that they managed to recapture the Hex vibe so exactly so many years after, despite the main dude having spent the intervening years making drum n bass and the drummer not even coming back.

Huh. That sounds... odd.

And I haven't listened to Hex yet, just bought Codename: Dustsucker used at Amazon a few weeks back.

all the love for talk talk is surprising to me. ive got spirit of eden which i liked for a while but i guess it kind of wore out on me. i dunno i can get over how his vocals are really gooey lame and at times the record just kind of sounds like a better version of radiohead. the orchestral part in inheritance really blew me away one late night next to forest but this is as far as my love for this band goes. how do i break the spell/where should i go next?
