There is a reason they can sell your crap to you for so cheap and that's because of their questionable ethics.

it's actually really simple: Wal-Mart is huge. They buy all their products from the distributors in bulk. Because they buy so much, Wal-Mart is essentially paying less for each product than a Mom 'n Pop store than doesn't have enough capital to buy products in that sort of bulk. So Wal-Mart can charge less because they paid less. What's sad is that it's an autocatalytic process. I'm not sure that's questionable ethics, it's just simple economics. Now whether JR should shop there is another question. If he can afford to pay a little more for a toy from a local toy store, he probably should.

What Walmart actually does is tell their distributors how much they're willing to pay. They have what's called a monopsony advantage, that is they are one buyer who faces many sellers. They're able to do this because of that economy of scale. If the distributor is not willing to meet the price point that Walmart sets, they can easily find someone else who will.

Their questionable ethics comes in the form of how they don't allow workers to unionize, their willingness to turn a blind-eye to factories which use child labour (though this has changed recently), their reluctance to hire people as full-time employees (resulting in them not having to pay for insurance or give other benefits entitled to full-time workers) and various other shenanigans.
