while i'm normally one to say that things like this are a distraction, in a way i think there will be a positive outcome to this. For this first time in recent memory (at least since 9/11) there has actually been mainstream discourse about the idea that muslims did not attack us on 9/11 and that jihadist muslims are not representative of the entire culture. It also reveals again how it's still acceptable to openly be racist against muslims in this country

i don't think, prior to 9/11, that there was any mainstream discussion of islam. it was always limited to academics like edward said (too bad he died before this happened, i'm interested to know what he'd have thought) or orientalist scholars like bernard lewis who we just assume know the subject matter because no one else really cares. unfortunately most of the coverage i've seen has been misinformed on both sides of the equation. we keep compartmentalizing islam into some totality just as we tend to make the west out to be one massive thing. sometimes i think when an issue is this complex people just need to shut the fuck up and spend a few years reading and traveling before they chime in on any aspect of it.
