Animal Collective - Oddsac

everything becomes a touchy subject when the idea that your opinion can be nulled cos your just a hipster comes into play.

ffs get a grip, grow a pair, and stop caring so much about the motivations for why people don't admire certain music as much as you do. bloody christ!

its not a matter of 'caring' about it too much... its just a simple fact. its a bummer but it doesnt bug me too much.

maximus you're pretty much right. there are exceptions of course (awepittance?) but you can tell a lot of the time. this is how i know for a fact that most of these people are full of shit:

i was there on the message boards back when sung tongs and here comes the indian came out - they weren't really "hip" back then. they were just awesome, there was nothing like it, and they were respected for their art.

some of the same sorts of people that were digging that stuff back then are today the ones who gang up on message boards and laugh together in their superiority with their fucking cigars at how MPP sucks and AC fans are retards and yada yada. it's irritating because it's difficult to call them out on their bullshit, most of the time if you try to call them out they'll say "i just don't like it man - are you crazy?" but in reality there are lots of them that are just sniveling, scumbag pricks.

i am very passionate on this subject, not Animal Collective specifically, just people pretending they're above others and saying a band sucks that you can otherwise easily assume they would like because said band has a lot of fans.

and the reason it really bothers me as you can see, is that most people put the shit down and truly believe that people who like AC are "lowly peasants" of the music world.

i started posting on atease recently and today i saw a post that started "i'm not a huge fan of animal collective, but..."

that post was called out, which i found pleasing. it's like if you're a "respected boarder" and you like animal collective you have to keep it a secret, or play it down, or forever be ashamed.

that's the truth right there.

i didnt once say that it applied to 'everyone' who doesnt like animal collective.

the vocal majority on forums like this however is another story.

I actually had a really good idea about why I am reluctant to enjoy AC. I believe it is because it is white music. White, as in 'transmodern', as opposed to 'postmodern'. If one one considers the ethos of 'cool', aka black, and how it has traveled through music scenes, the kind of alienated, abrasive-yet-sleek music that the big boys of IDM have made and we enjoy embodies the furthest development of 'cool'. I was thinking the other day about how Flying Lotus and Animal Collective have kind of melted the genres they were originally associated with and are now sonically experimental electronic music. AC isn't 'cool' to the nerdy robot beat lovers because the indie rock roots still show.

We're hearing some strange new type of IDM but it isn't phat, fresh, or sick.
