I just listened to "zomby ep" again for first time in years...wtf happened to this guy. Total savant. Same with hudmo. Started off so strong and then got so fucking shitty.

I think some people get hyped once they break out of the underground and get more mainstream recognition. Everyone gives them default acclaim - new fans, labels, distro, new management. PR goes into overdrive. Most of these guys veer into pop out of fun, but that makes it worse. Why go back to experimentation and novelty when what you do now is paying the bills, getting bigger gigs, and more fans. All this feeds off each other to the point where even the artist doesn't second guess themselves as they travel into mediocrity. Old fans who criticize come off as assholes, new fans don't know any better. Since review sites often do just as much promo as the artists and labels themselves, they hesitate to give anything below an adequate rating and write-up ( I think the only take down of Hudmo's last album I saw was from TMT ).

It's like the Abilene paradox all around.

Yep, that's the one that comes to mind when I remember what made Zomby so exciting early on, one of those rare songs that makes you physically and mentally freak the fuck out, literally declare outloud WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!?!?!?!?

That track also proceeded all of the off kilter footwork / juke that was years from breaking into the mainstream
