timing changes and key changes and whatnot. not exactly a great genre name, but neither is idm so ya knooooow.

Sounds to me as this is close to progressive rock.

if battles is considered math rock, then surely helmet must be as well?

Based on what, having shared a drummer?

Based on helmet using irregular time sigs and quite "angular" (whatever the fuck that means) chord progressions/harmonies. Even their big hits like "in the meantime" had these characteristics.

Apparently prog rock is considered a big influence, but math rock has a harder edge than prog.

Yeah to me math rock is a mixture of progressive rock and post-hardcore/indie rock.

I actually liked Medications album from this year, it was my cheesy happy summer album.

I just listened to this, thought it was great! I didn't find it cheesy at all. A bit more happy than their first, but great none the less.

Was surprised to see the Redneck Manifesto mentioned in the OP... they're probably my favourite irish band, been listening to them for a good 5 years. Saw them live at electric picnic a couple days ago and they certainly provided :)

not great video quality

heres a nicer one from back in the day

dunno how i overlooked my two favourite math rock albums period

owls "owls" LP might be the best thing steve albini produced

and i honestly think faraquet ruined math rock for everyone else because no one will ever EVER be able to top "the view from this tower"

I was in a math-rock kick a couple years ago, kinda fallen out of it but I still enjoy some from time to time... I should give my Don Caballero collection a re-listen

Also dig Battles (of course), Dysrhythmia, Holy Fuck, Maps & Atlases, and Tera Melos, I also like Hella and love Lightning Bolt, but I always considered them more noise-rock than math

how is slint 'math rock'?

Debatable I suppose, but this slint tune surely qualifies as math rock.

Fans of the whole math rock sound should check out the early influences to the genre like Massacre and Ruins
