Based on helmet using irregular time sigs and quite "angular" (whatever the fuck that means) chord progressions/harmonies. Even their big hits like "in the meantime" had these characteristics.

Apparently prog rock is considered a big influence, but math rock has a harder edge than prog.

dunno how i overlooked my two favourite math rock albums period

owls "owls" LP might be the best thing steve albini produced

and i honestly think faraquet ruined math rock for everyone else because no one will ever EVER be able to top "the view from this tower"

I was in a math-rock kick a couple years ago, kinda fallen out of it but I still enjoy some from time to time... I should give my Don Caballero collection a re-listen

Also dig Battles (of course), Dysrhythmia, Holy Fuck, Maps & Atlases, and Tera Melos, I also like Hella and love Lightning Bolt, but I always considered them more noise-rock than math
