I'm going to kill someone

So I locked my bike to a pole on a busy street, went to a friend's party, and when I came out, this was all that was left of it:

I want to find the fuck who did it, chop off his hands, make them into nunchucks, and beat him to death with them. It's going to cost me like $200 to rebuild that fucking thing.

I had a flimsy wire lock on my (crap) bike and I left it outside my apartment building among other bikes as usual with the wire lock around the frame and tire. The next day I found my bike without the wire lock. Someone must have cut it off, borrowed the bike and was kind enough to return it.

I live in the socialist hellhole Finland. I do live in an area with student housing only, so that might have played a role.

my parents were robbed at the weekend cos they left their bathroom window open for a couple of hours...

they turned the place upside down, took the tv, brand new video camera and car.

Forget about it. Get a very cheap bike, it's the best way for the city. I've been as mad as you are now when I left my very favorite MTB at the railway station over night, locked with a huge lock. The next morning i returned and all i found was my cut-off lock. Those bastards stole me 6 bikes so far. I've stopped buying them when the fourth was gone. I was lucky enough to find two bikes lying around in the middle of the night. Just right when I needed them :)

I don't ride a bike, but my friend had his stolen the other week. £300+ road bike.

The shit thing about this is that it was stolen while bolted to a bike rack, surrounded by about 40 other bikes while he was at work, a mere four days before he was due to jet out to Vancouver with it for a bike ride along the west coast towards Mexico for two and a bit months. He came back to my office raging angry tears. His first holiday in years and a major venture for him and his fucking bike got stolen.

Me and friends were chipping in to buy him a new bike the day after, but our boss ended up buying him one instead. Which was awesome.

there's too many professional and organized bike thieves in this town. i once locked my bike next to a subway terminal, came back a few hours later, and the whole fucking bike rack was cleared, all that was left was a buncha broken locks

i've lived in pretty seedy areas and never had my bike stolen. i've left it in front of the places i lived without locks. then i moved to south pasadena (california's paradise), lived on the second floor and had the bike swiped from the balcony. i'm still not over it to this day!

yes, if there's a lesson to be learned, that's that if a bike is at all valuable to you, you need to minimize its exposure Period. especially if it also happens to be expensive. if it doesn't get stolen it'll get stripped, eventually.. so if your bike is going to be left on the street with any regularity, keep that in mind in terms of upgrades.

Well, I ride almost every day. It's my major mode of transportation and also the way I stay in shape, so I think investing in a good bike is worth it, even if it might get stolen/stripped. I just have to be more diligent about its safety from now on. I'm going to get a front wheel that's a quick release, and start locking it to the back wheel & frame, as well as taking the seat with me.

The bike was about $380 after taxes, and I can replace the missing parts for less than that. I still have the frame, which would have been the expensive part.

Seriously, though, I own a car. I usually only use it for moving big things or going on road trips. My bike gets 0 MPG, and leaves no carbon footprint. Plus it's more fun.
