Koran Burning

Recommended Posts

On a side note, the type of racism experienced in the USA is probably very different from the rest of the world if you take the historical context into account(slavery, deprived of roots and culture etc.) - so it is likely that I cannot know it from the American point of view since I haven't experienced it.

well it would appear that there is a very definite cultural difference in the way that those situations are handled, between England and America.

if your friend was to refer to himself as "Pak-man" here, someone would definitely get offended.

I agree that there are definately large difference between how it's treated between UK + US. An old girlfriend used to work for county council. They couldn't say black coffee. They couldn't say they had a Chinese or Indian last night. There are plenty more but I forget.

It's gone way too far but you can't say that because that itself will be coined as racist.

People generally are not offended by their origins, but offended by what are seen to be derogatory terms of reference.

I live in the conservative heartland of west oxfordshire, David Cameron's constituency. Proper white middle classed around here - yet one of my mates who lives in town is as black as the night (from the west indies) and is openly gay. He calls himself a statistic!

it's not even really that anymore...

like, if you were to call a black person the N word, it's more likely that other people (who it concerns not) would get more offended.

edit: at least it is like that here in England

You cant say black coffee?

Ive a funny story relating to the latter. My mates were in the car and one of them had just picked up a chinese and was eating in the car, some sexy looking rice dish. Then when we stopped for petrol in the garage my mate was like "Awww man, I'd absolutely murder a chinese right now" turns around to the counter and there was a Chinese man standing there. I had to fucking laugh.

I dunno if Americans get the phrase "to murder" but you can probably tell from the context it means devour it.

Subject change: Apparently the city that this church is in is really tolerant. I expected a really small town, but it's a college town with over 100,000 people and gay democrat mayor.

The church should move to Southern Minnesota. They'd fit in.

it is exactly the same flavor of flawed logic as 'we shouldn't protest the war because it puts our troops in danger'

Not at all. Burning a Koran is a direct expression of hate towards those who practice Islam, which can be taken as provocation without much of a stretch. Protesting a war is not only not anti-Islamic, but is directed toward the American government (and those others whose armies are fighting), not toward any practitioners of Islam. The acts express two completely different messages, with two sorts of consequences that need to be distinguished.

I realize this, but this community seems really out of place. I don't see the point in living somewhere if your "Morals" or whatever don't fit in, at all, with your city's.

yeah, it's getting pretty bad over here. usually it's only that anal retentive in cities, but basically it's just best to stick to a predetermined vocabulary while at work.

it's gainesville, probably the most liberal city in florida. maybe the most liberal city in the entire south if you don't count austin tx as the south. huge punk/postpunk scene in the mid-late 90s, hot water music, i hate myself, and against me all came out of gainesville.

so yeah, a bit incongruent. i expect a lot of angry kids with piercings will protest this.

It's probably a locational thing. When you're in certain areas of the States for example, the racial tensions are much different, for obvious reasons, nevermind the unspoken racial/class divide.. The 'N' word would provoke strong responses from people whose friends/parents were abused/assaulted, or whose grandparents were slaves. When the word is pretty much associated with violent assholes coming to abuse you or your family, or privileged white people who are pissing on you, it's just in poor taste for someone to use it, especially with strangers.

*said in context. there are obvious cultural differences all over, where these situations are concerned

but my point about other people getting offended is not just limited to use of the N word. indeed, as said by chassis - it's getting to the point where you can't ask for black coffee without someone in the queue squirming their face up like they're chewing on a fucking wasp

Well who cares if someone squirms up their face like a ninny. It's black coffee, let them deal with it. WTF are you supposed to call it, coffee without the conqueror's cream?
